LAB SAFETY ORIENTATION

EYE WASH FOUNTAIN Should any chemical splash in your eyes, immediately use a continuous flow of running water to flush your eyes for a period of at least 20 minutes.

CHEMICAL SHOWER If corrosive chemicals should contact your exposed skin, wash the affected areas with flowing water for as long as needed to remove the corrosive chemical.

FIRE SAFETY If hair or clothing should catch fire, DO NOT RUN. Drop to the floor and roll slowly to smother the flame. Use a fire blanket and wrap it around the victim.

FIRST AID KIT Use the first aid kit provided for cuts, and other minor accidents when needed.Ask the teacher first for needed first aid supplies.

HEATING SOLUTIONS When heating a flammable liquid, use a hot plate not a flame. Check to make sure the glassware is not cracked or chipped before heating the solution.

USING A BUNSEN BURNER Make sure the rubber hose is attached firmly to the gas valve. Use a striker after turning on the gas valve to light. Adjust the heighth of the flame with the needle valve. Pin back long hair, and roll up loose sleeves.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER Point the hose of the extinguisher at the base of the flame. Pull the pin out of the lever, push down, and spray on the flames to extinguish.

BROKEN GLASS Dispose of any broken glass in the designated container. Do not handle broken glass. Sweep up, and wash hands if you handled it.

SAFETY GOGGLES Always wear your safety goggles when working with any chemicals or equipment.

EMERGENCY CALL BUTTON In case of an accident or medical emergency, push the call button and ask the office to dial 911 if needed. Use the first aid kit, if needed, until help arrives.

ACID DILUTION If diluting an acid, always pour the acid slowly into water with stirring to dissipate the heat generated. Remember AAA - ALWAYS ADD ACID to water!

HEATING LIQUIDS IN A TEST TUBE When heating a liquid in a test tube, turn the mouth of the test tube away from yourself and others.

CHEMICAL SAFETY Read the label on a reagent bottle carefully before using the chemical. After removing the chemical from the bottle, check to make sure that it is the correct chemical for that procedure.

LAB PROCEDURES Read all of the directions for a laboratory procedure before proceeding with the first part. Follow all of the safety tips and directions exactly as written.

PROPER CHEMICAL TRANSFER To avoid contamination, do not return unused chemicals to a reagent bottle. Never put a pipet, dropper, or spatula into a reagent bottle. Pour in a beaker and use as your supply.

LAB RULES FOR HYGIENE DO NOT CHEW GUM, EAT OR DRINK IN THE LAB AREA OR CLASSROOM. NEVER TASTE ANY CHEMICALS!

LAB CLEAN UP Wash your hands with soap and water at the end of each laboratory. Keep your hands away from your face when working with chemicals.

LAB SAFETY SHOULD BE #1!
