2 Good Morning 10/16/2015 Starter: What should you never do with dangerous chemicals around? Pass around the gradesheets. Goal for today: learn about safety in the lab. Go through a PowerPoint on Safety to prepare us for demos and labs.

3 SAFETY IN THE SCIENCE LABORATORY

4 Read instructions before starting experiments; Follow all directions carefully

5 Don’t touch anything until instructed to do so;

6 Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor;

7 Do not eat food,drink beverages or chew gum in the lab;

8 Absolutely no horseplay in the lab!

9 Keep work areas clean and tidy; Keep aisles clear;

10 Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment Safety shower

11 Eyewash station

12 Fire blanket

13 Fire extinguisher

14 Dispose of all chemical waste properly, according to instructions; Clean equipment and work area after use; Return all materials to proper location

15 Keep hands away from face, eyes and mouth while using chemicals; Wash hands thoroughly before leaving lab;

16 Goggles must be worn at all times during a lab; Wrong! Correct!

17 Dress properly during a lab; –Tie long hair back –No dangling jewelry –No loose, baggy clothing

18 No sandals (shoes should completely cover top of foot) Wear lab aprons No contact lenses

19 Report any accident or injury to the instructor immediately;

20 If a chemical splashes on your skin, immediately flush with running water and notify instructor

21 When checking a chemical for odors, gently waft vapors towards nose; NOYES

22 Double check labels on chemical bottles Take only as much chemical as you need; Never return unused chemicals to their original containers;

23 When diluting acids always add the acid to the water; –“Do as you oughta – add acid to water”

24 Never handle broken glass with your bare hands; –Use a dust pan and brush –Place broken glass in glass disposal container

25 Never use chipped, cracked or dirty glassware; Never leave a lit burner unattended; When heating a substance in a test tube, never point the mouth of the test tube at yourself or others;

26 Never look down into a container that is being heated; Be careful – hot glass doesn’t look hot!

27 Never pipet by mouth! Use a pump or bulb

28 Now The Safety Quiz and Safety Agreement If we have time, we will watch some videos on safety.
