1 Lab Safety

2 #1 Rule? Follow all directions!
It is important that you are well prepared for the lab. Read the entire procedure before beginning the lab. Listen to all instructor directions. If you are in doubt, read directions, ask partner, then ask your instructor for help. No Horsing around in lab

3 2. Wear safety goggles for all labs that involve hazardous chemicals or heating solutions.

4 3. Know the location and how to use all of the safety equipment in the laboratory; e.g.
the fire extinguisher the emergency shower fire blanket eye wash But if anything bad happens, make sure to notify the teacher first!

5 4. Dress for the lab Avoid wearing overly bulky or loose fitting clothing Remove dangling jewelry Tie back long hair Roll up long sleeves NO open-toed shoes.

6 Chemistry Specific: Do not leave a lighted Bunsen burner unattended.
Use a hot plate, not a flame, if a flammable liquid is present.

7 Only handle chemicals under the direction of your instructor.
If you spill an acid or another corrosive material, wash hand/ skin off with cold water immediately and notify the instructor.

8 Do not use chipped or cracked glassware
Do not use chipped or cracked glassware. Notify your instructor and he/she will replace it immediately. Careful! Hot glass looks the same as cold glass.

9 When heating a liquid in a test tube, never point the test tube toward yourself or anyone else. Point test tubes away from all people!

10 Only smell chemicals when instructed, and indirectly by wafting the air towards you with your hand.

11 Read the label on the container or info in directions before using the chemical in the container.
Check for proper handling procedures before using the chemical.

12 Immediately, report all injuries and accidents to the instructor.

13 If an acid or base is spilled:
Spilled acids can be made safe with sodium bicarbonate solution (baking soda)  Spilled bases can be made safe with acetic acid solution (vinegar)

15 When you are finished CLEAN UP!
Make sure that the gas, water and electricity have been turned off and, all the equipment is returned to the proper location. Dispose of chemicals and waste as per directions. - don’t just put things back in a labeled jar!

16 Clean your area well: Wipe down all surfaces after supplies are put away into their proper containers. Wash your hands at the end of every lab activity.

1. The printed directions in the lab book tell a student to pour a small amount of hydrochloric acid into a beaker. James puts on safety goggles before pouring the acid into the beaker. 2. It is rather warm in the lab during a late spring day. Anna slips off her shoes and walks barefoot to the sink to clean her glassware. 3. While washing glassware, Mike splashes some water on Evan. To get even, Evan splashes him back.
