2 indice INDEX Bunsen burner safety Personal safety
Safety with chemicals Safety equipement Safety with glassware

3 Bunsen burner safety A bunsen burner flame is very hot. The center of the flame will be over 1000 degrees Celsius. Threat burner flames with respect. 1 : Heating safety 2 : Danger of gas leak 3 : Danger of burns

4 Personal safety Goggles must be worn anytime you use dangerous chemicals, hot liquids or solids, and other potential sources of splashes. Make use of any safety equipment such as beaker tongs, test tube clamps, thermal gloves, etc. when handling hot beakers, test tubes or other containers. Wear your laboratory coat or apron. Do not perform any experiment that is unauthorized.

5 Safety with chemicals Wash your hands when you are finished with labs.
Do not touch or taste any chemicals. Read chemicals labels more than once before using the contents. Keep your hands away from your face. To smell something, hold it away from your nose and wave your hand over it towards your nose.

6 Safety equipement 1) Know the location of the fire extinguisher, first aid kit and fire alarm switch. Ø  FIRE EXTINGUISHER: next to science room door. Ø  FIRST AID KIT: on the first floor (Doctor’s surgery) Ø ALARM SWITCH: on teacher’s desk (it is a big red button)

7 Safety with glassware · Clean and air dry all glassware.
·   Never use chipped or broken glass ·  Broken glass should never be handled with your hands and should be placed in the proper container. ·   Broken glass that has contacted BLOOD must be disposed in a sharps container. · Use a dustpan and broom to sweep up broken glass; DO NOT USE PAPER TOWELS. · Do not force glass tubing into rubber stoppers.

8 Heating safety Wear your safety glasses
Long hair should be tied back when working near on open flame Heating safety Secure loose clothing when working near an open flame If your hair or clothing catches on fire stop drop and roll

9 Danger of gas leak Use the proper procedures when lighting a Bunsen Burner Always use the main gas shut off valve on desk to shut off bunsen burner. The valve at the base of the burner is only used to control the flame

10 Danger of burns Do not handle heated glassware or materials directly. Use tongs, test-tube holders, or heat resistant gloves Point test tubes away from yourself when heating substances in them Do not reach across an open flame

11 Safety with chemicals Flush any chemical spill on your skin with plenty of water. When heating anything in a test tube, point the mouth of the test tube towards a wall, away from people. Do not lay the glass stopper from a reagent bottle on the lab table. When mixing acids and water, pour the acid into the water. Wear your laboratory safety glasses at all time. Wear your laboratory coats or apron.
