2 Lab Safety zOn Friday you will have a safety test yYou have to get a 100 on it. yIf you don’t, you will do test-corrections and a retest, but the original grade still stands. zYour notes today are on your safety contract

3 General Safety Rules 2. Listen to or read instructions carefully before attempting to do anything. 23. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from chemicals, heated materials, or things that might be able to shatter. 27. Notify your teacher if any spills or accidents occur.

4 General Safety Rules 16. After handling chemicals, always wash your hands with soap and water. 16. During lab work, keep your hands away from your face. 25. Tie back long hair.

5 General Safety Rules 25. Roll up loose sleeves. No dangly jewelry or baggy clothing. 11. Know the location of the fire extinguisher, fire blanket, eyewash station, and first aid kit. 9.Keep your work area uncluttered. Take to the lab station only what is necessary. 5.NO FOOD OR DRINK, NOT EVEN WATER.

6 General Safety Rules 24. It is suggested that you wear glasses rather than contact lenses. 16 & 34.Never put anything into your mouth during a lab experiment. 16. Clean up your lab area at the conclusion of the laboratory period. 8. Never “horse around” or play practical jokes in the laboratory.

7 Glassware Safety 45. Chipped or cracked glassware should not be used. Show it to the teacher. 41. Broken glassware should not be disposed of in a classroom trashcan. There is a special glass disposal container for it.

8 Glassware Safety zPour down a glass stirring rod to prevent liquids from splattering. 27. If a piece of glassware gets broken, do not try to clean it up by yourself. Notify the teacher. 42. When inserting glass tubing into a rubber stopper, apply a lubricant like glycerin to the glass and use a twisting motion.

9 Glassware Safety 48. Do not place hot glassware in water. Rapid cooling may make it shatter.

10 Chemical Safety 23.Wear protective goggles and a lab apron whenever heating anything or using chemicals. 6.Never mix chemicals together unless you are told to do so (and then only in the manner specified). 31.Never taste any chemicals (you should never taste anything in the lab).

11 Chemical Safety 31.If you need to smell the odor of a chemical, waft the fumes toward your nose with one hand. Do not put your nose over the container and inhale the fumes. 36.Never pour water into a concentrated acid. Acid should be poured slowly into water.

12 Chemical Safety zFollow the instructions of your teacher when disposing of all chemicals. 33.Never return chemicals to their original container 16.Wash your hands after handling hazardous chemicals.

13 Heating Safety 52. Let burners and hotplates cool down before touching them. Test to see if they are cool enough by bringing the back of your hand close to them. 52.Use tongs and/or protective gloves to handle hot objects. 49.Never reach across an open flame or burner.

14 Heating Safety 51.Always point the top ends of test tubes that are being heated away from people. 51. When heating a test tube, move it around slowly over the flame to distribute the heat evenly.

15 Heating Safety 49.When lighting a burner, wait until the striker(or match) is in place before you turn on the gas. 50.Never leave a burner or hotplate unattended.

16 Lab Accident Accident: General Chemical Spills What To Do: Notify Teacher. Teacher may have you clean it up. If acid, use baking soda to neutralize. If base, use vinegar to neutralize. All clean-up paper towels go in the FIRE CAN.

17 Lab Accident Accident: Chemical Spills on the skin What To Do: Flush with large quantities of water. Run water over the area for at least 20 seconds. If the body part will not fit in a sink (chest, both legs) the emergency shower will be used.

18 Lab Accident Accident: Something in the Eyes What To Do: Flush eyes at the eye wash immediately with plenty of water for between 5 and 20 minutes. If a foreign object is lodged in the eye, donot allow the eye to be rubbed. Go to nurse.

19 Lab Accidents Accident: Fire To Do: If a desk or papers are on fire, notify the teacher. The teacher may have you use the fire extinguisher.

20 Lab Accidents How to use the fire extinguisher. P – Pull (the pin) A – Aim (at the base of the fire) S – Squeeze (the handle) S – Sweep (the nozzle side to side)

21 Lab Accidents Accident: Fire To Do: If a person is on fire, notify the teacher. The teacher may have you use the fire blanket to put out the fire.

22 Lab Accidents How to use the fire blanket. Have the victim lay down Throw the fire blanket over them Quickly pat the fire out DO NOT WRAP THEM IN THE BLANKET WHEN THEY ARE STANDING UP

23 Lab Accidents Accident: Poisoning (ingested chemical) What To Do: Find out what substance was ingested and alert the teacher immediately.
