7. Also in your manual … General Safety Rules 1. The laboratory is a place of serious work. Absolutely no practical jokes or misconduct will be tolerated 2. Safety goggles must be worn by everyone in the room during experiments involving caustic or corrosive chemicals, heat or flames, and hot liquids or glassware.

8. 3. Report any accident or injury no matter how minor, to your instructor immediately. 4. Prepare for each laboratory activity by reading all instructions BEFORE coming to class to perform the experiment. Follow carefully any change in procedure given by the instructor.

9. 5. Always follow written and verbal instructions given by instructor. 6. Use only materials and equipment authorized by the instructor. Perform only those laboratory activities where instructions and permission have been given by your instructor.

10. 7. If you have missed instruction on how to use certain equipment, ask your instructor to demonstrate its proper use before you proceed. 8. Dispose of chemicals, broken glass, solid waste, and other materials properly as instructed. Only certain liquids should be washed down the sinks since they have no garbage disposals, and some solutions are toxic to landfills.

11. Do not place matches, or broken glass into the sinks. Only liquids safe to go down the drain can be placed there. 9. Always report broken materials, and damaged or improperly working equipment to the instructor immediately.

12. 10. Never carry hot equipment or dangerous chemicals through a group of students. 11. Never taste anything, or touch chemicals with your hands unless specifically instructed to do so. Keep hands away from your face, eyes, and body while using chemicals or solutions. If chemicals or solution do come in contact with your skin, wash the area immediately.

13. 12. After performing any experiment, always wash your hands before leaving the room. 13. Eating or drinking in the laboratory area is not permitted at any time. 14. During laboratory activities, keep long hair out of the way. Roll up long sleeves above the wrist. Excessive and bulky clothing, long-hanging necklaces, or loose-fitting bracelets should not be worn.

14. 15. When removing an electrical plug from the socket, pull the plug, not the electrical cord. Keep electrical plugs away fro water, or other liquids. 16. Students are not permitted in the laboratory storage room without the approval of the instructor.

15. 17. Know the locations and proper use of the emergency shower, eye, and face wash fountain, fire blanket, and fire extinguishers. Know the proper fire drill procedure. 18. When you have completed an experiment, clean, dry, and return all equipment and materials to its proper place as instructed. 19. Always keep your working area clean.

16. Chemical Safety Rules 1. Never breathe fumes directly. Always test for odor of chemicals by waving your hand over the container and sniffing cautiously from a distance. 2. Never pour chemicals back into the stock container. Never exchange stoppers, or lay them on the table.

17. 3. When diluting an acid or base, always pour the acid/base into the water, never pour water into an acid/base. 4. In case of a burn from an acid or a base, wash the affected area immediately with plenty of running water. If the eye is involved, wash it continuously in the eye wash fountain for at least 15 minutes. Report the incident to your instructor immediately.

18. 5. Check labels before taking chemicals or solutions. Make sure equipment is being used in the proper manner. Report and malfunctions to the instructor immediately. 6. Never use mouth suction in filling pipettes. Always use a suction bulb or pipette pump.

19. Heat, Fire, and Flame Safety Rules 1. When lighting Bunsen burners, always light the match before turning on the gas. 2. Never leave Bunsen burners or hot plates that are in use unattended. Turn them off and unplug the hotplate when not in use. 3. Never reach over a flame or hot plate. Keep your head and clothing away from flames and heat.

20. 4.When heating test tubes, always tilt the tube, and never point it in the direction of other students. Never look down into the tube while heating it. 5.Alcohols or other volatile material that can easily burst into flame may not be used in the area of an open flame.
