What is Biology? Biology is the systematic study of living things and how they function, interact and adapt to their surroundings.

Science = Observation Sir Isaac Newton Newton was a scientist in the 1600’s. The story goes that one day while sitting in his orchard drinking tea, an apple fell and hit him on the head. From that point he studied why, he observed. He concluded that the moon, the earth and literally everything was affected by gravity. Gravity was a puller. The stronger the pull, the more gravity. Have you ever asked why? Have you ever taken anything apart?

QUESTION! Write this question on page 3, cornell style. How do we “DO” science

The Nature of Science Main Idea : How do we “do” science? Scientists observe. Sometimes your observations/assumptions/hypothesis could be false, or not what you expected, but does that make your “experiment” a failure? Many scientists have had revolutionary breakthroughs because of something in their experiment that they did not account for…. For example….

Science = Observation PROVE IT! Science tests what we can see… So lets see what you see….. Many professions rely on their ability to observe… Different points of view/emotions will give produce observations.

Shoe Lab Observation 1: Find a show on the other side of the room and write 5 things about that shoe from where you sit. 30 seconds. Observation 2: Look again and record 5 more things Observation 3: Look AGAIN! What judgements/inferences can you make about that person based on their shoe whether you are right or wrong? Sometimes “observations” aren’t just looking. What decisions or judgments could you make just by looking at your shoes? Name 4 professions you think observations would be a critical skill to have?

Shoe Lab(bottom 1/2 p. 0) Observation 1: Take one shoe off and switch with someone at your table. Write 5 things about that shoe from where you sit. Cannot touch or move shoe. Observation 2: Look again, what ELSE can you see? 5 more things. Observation 3: Look AGAIN! What other judgements/inferences can you make about the PERSON based on their shoe whether you are right or wrong? 3 observations. Sometimes “observations” aren’t just looking. What decisions or judgments could you make just by looking at your shoes? Name 4 professions you think observations would be a critical skill to have?

Monday! Have a pencil or paper in your notebook so I can check your bumper sticker. Homework policy is…. Daily Questions ALWAYS go in the back of the book, (we are on DQ4) If you have not turned in your syllabus please give it to me. If you lost it or need one, check my website!
