Attendance

This is Simon. He is in Year 7 and has 90% attendance. Is that good? What does this mean?

Simon thinks this is pretty good, so do his parents. Are they right? 90% attendance = ½ day missed every week!! (Would your boss like you to be off work this much??). That’s practically part time! Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri ? Absent half a day every week

Lets looks a little closer….. 1 school year at 90% attendance = 4 whole weeks of lessons MISSED!!! 38 school weeks Sept July ? Absent for 4 weeks

90% attendance over 5 years of secondary school…. = ½ a school year missed! Sept July Y7 Y8 Y9 ½ a year absent from school Y10 Y11

What impact might this have on Simon’s life……? Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = GCSE grade DROP in achievement. (DfE) The greater the attendance the greater the achievement.

Percentage Attendance Weekly 90% = ½ day 80% = 1 day 70% = 1 ½ days 60% = 2 days 50% = 2 ½ days 40% = 3 days 30% = 3 ½ days

Percentage Attendance Termly/Yearly 90% = 1 week 2 days = 4 weeks 80% = 2 weeks 4 days = 8 weeks 70% = 4 weeks 1 day = 12 weeks 60% = 5 weeks 3 days = 16 weeks 50% = 7 weeks = 20 weeks 40% = 8 weeks 2 days = 24 weeks 30% = 9 weeks 1 day = 28 weeks

Percentage Attendance by Yr 11 90% = 20 weeks = 1 ½ TERMS 80% = 40 weeks = 1YEAR 70% = 60 weeks = 1 ½ YEARS 60% = 80 weeks = 2 YEARS 50% = 100 weeks = 2 ½ YEARS

What could Simon’s potential earnings look like? Graduate degree £15.01 per hour A levels £10.25 per hour GCSE’s £9.02 per hour. no qualifications £7.44 per hour. Potential Earnings average per hour Qualifications What do you want for you?

Grades = £ Some statistics indicate that pupils leaving with 5As at GCSE, over a lifetime, will earn £350,000 more than those leaving with 5Cs

So 90% is not as good as it first seemed. What can do as a student to increase my attendance? Make sure you come into school as much as you can, taking as a few sick days as possible. Keep a track of your attendance in your planner with the help of your tutor. Minimise the amount of time you have dental appointments/doctors appointments in the school day – try to get after school appointments if possible. Don’t be late to school as this effects your attendance.
