Aims and outcomes Aim is to introduce the learners to working as part of a team with the hair and beauty sector Learner outcome You will produce a leaflet showing different types of communication.

For businesses to be successful you must work as a team For businesses to be successful you must work as a team. Team work is very important. Good communication skills are very important. If all of the staff communicate well with each other then the business will run more smoothly.

Communication Verbal communication is where you speak to each other face to face or on the phone. Communication is speaking, language, words and sounds. Communication within the hair and beauty industry is very important. We need to establish what our clients needs are. We need to talk to our clients to make them feel at ease. Communication rules Speak clearly, speak in a friendly manner, use no technical language. Try to vary your tone of voice. Speak in an appropriate way to both clients and colleagues.

Activity Using the wipe board draw an emotion. Go round the room to see if you can guess the emotion

Non verbal communication We communicate in more than just words. Body language is a big part of communication. We use body language every day often without noticing. Learn to notice other peoples body language. Listening is also part of non verbal communication There are 3 main steps to listening Hearing – listening enough to hear what a person is telling you Understanding – Understanding what has been said Making a decision - you need to decide whether to answer them back or ask a question

Activity Check out each others body language what are they telling you, what are the signals?

Adapting the way we speak We speak to people in different ways we adapt our speech. Example if we speak to babies. If we speak to elderly. Change pitch and tone to make thing sound more interesting
