Student Orientation for Distance Learning Central Piedmont Community College Distance Learning

Purpose of Orientation To provide information, resources, and tutorials of what a learner may need in order to succeed in a distance learning course. –better prepared –ready to concentrate on the course content –determine suitability for online learning.

Instructional Objectives for the Distance CPCC Online Orientation Learners will assess their “readiness” for online instruction by completing the online readiness assessments and sending the results to the instructor. Learners will successfully navigate the learning management systems by identifying components in the buttons. Learners will successfully access and login to a Blackboard or Moodle course using the appropriate identification procedures. Continued on next slide

Instructional Objectives for the Distance CPCC Online Orientation Learners will demonstrate the knowledge of taking and completing online assessments by demonstrating the process of submitting an online practice test. Learners will demonstrate the knowledge of completing, copying, pasting, and attaching assignments by the process of submitting an online assignment. Learners will perform various asynchronous and synchronous virtual communication modes by communicating to fellow classmates. Continued from previous slide

Module One Online Learner Assessment Students will be introduced to what distance learning is and the personal attributes, concepts, and skills that they may need to successfully complete a distance learning course This module will cover the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning? An introductory video will cover these topics the student's responsibilities, textbooks and materials, interaction, on- campus meetings, grades and testing.

Module Two Computer Requirements & Internet Knowledge This module will introduce students to some basic Internet concepts and skills that they may need when taking a distance learning course. It will provide an overview of hardware, software, and technical issues that students may need to review and address.

Module Three Computer Skills Students must have basic computer skills including the ability to use a mouse and Internet browser, and have a fundamental understanding of how to use a computer in order to be successful in distance education. This module will provide the learner with an opportunity to review their skills and acquire the knowledge of what is expected in an online learning class.

Module Four Introduction to Blackboard & Moodle This module will introduce the learner to the two Learning Management Systems that are supported by Distance CPCC. The module will include tutorials and support documentation to address many of the most common questions and concerns faced by students who are new to online classes.

Module Five Hands-On Blackboard Congratulations! You have registered for your online class at CPCC. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills obtained in the preceding 4 modules. Navigate through the Blackboard environment, utilized the communication features, submit assignments, and complete two assessments.
