TYPES OF POETRY

NARRATIVE POEMS A Narrative Poem combines elements of fiction and poetry to tell a story Like short stories, they usually include characters, setting, plot, conflict, and point of view. Like other poems, narrative poetry uses sound devices like rhythm and rhyme. It also uses figurative language (similes, metaphors, hyperbole, etc.) to create memorable images or word pictures. Narrative poems may tell about heroic deeds, amazing events, or larger-than-life characters. Some may also be about ordinary people and everyday stories.

LYRIC POEM A Lyric poem expresses the poet’s thoughts and feelings about a single image or idea in a vivid, musical language.

CONCRETE POEM These poems are shaped to look like their subjects. Poets arrange the lines to make a picture on the page.

MOOD The atmosphere or feeling created by the writer in a literary work or passage. Mood can be expressed through imagery, word choice, setting, voice, and theme. For example, the mood in Edgar Allen Poe’s work is gloomy and dark. The Mood is the way you feel as a Reader.

TONE The author’s particular attitude, either stated or implied in the writing. The Tone is the Speaker’s Attitude toward the Subject.
