Frederick Douglass By: Emily Sosso

He was born in Easton, Maryland in February, 1818

Born the son a white of man and a slave woman. His full name is Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey. As a boy, Frederick secretly taught himself how to read and write.

He escaped from slavery in September of 1838 at the age of 20. Frederick’s public-speaking skills impressed the members of the Anti- Slavery Society. Because of this, the society asked him to give regular lectures in Also, Douglass became one of the best- known speaker in the United States. He wrote several autobiographies, too.

Frederick Douglass spoke at a Forth of July celebration in 1852.

“The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common.... This Fourth of July is yours not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn.”

Frederick Douglass published his own pro-abolition newspaper, The North Star, in It was published until 1860.
