3 Slavery Frederick Douglass was in slavery since he was six years old. and he had to take care of a kid in slavery. They didn’t want him to learn so he decided to teach himself. His mother got beaten by Fredericks father. Frederick called him his master and he was a white man. They never new his real birth date all they knew was he was born in the year 1818 and was born by the eastern shore of Maryland. And would be beaten if he did something wrong or did something where he was trying to learn. He was really smart he made the escape and he did it without being spotted .

4 Life After Slavery He wrote many autobiographies and his wife's name was Anna Murray. He wanted to do something about slavery. Because white people were mean to black people. Harriet Tubman came to his house because she wanted to do something too. After a while he started to give speeches and people were amazed. He wrote a letter to the president Abraham Lincoln and he got to meet and talk about slavery and what they could do to stop it. While Abraham was thinking of ways to stop slavery, Frederick was writing a news paper called the North Star. After a while he got bored of the name so he changed it to the Frederick Douglass news paper.

5 Harpers Ferry Harpers Ferry was in West Virginia and it was an arsenal. John Brown wanted to seize Harpers Ferry so he recruited black people as army men and white people as captains. During the raid in 1859 they did not have that many people they only had 21 soldiers against hundreds of marines. They had their plan set up and they where ready to attack Harpers Ferry. At the end of the raid John Brown had gotten captured and was hung. Frederick Douglass did not go to the battle because he knew it would fail.

6 Family When Frederick came home he had heard that one of his little girls had passed away. It was bad times for Frederick. After that he started to write his autobiography. Then one day his house was set on fire burned down and he had lost one of his sons in the fire. He was very angry, people let him stay at their houses. Then he got a letter in the mail that said “one of your books needs to be published or you will go back to slavery.” He started to write and write until he got one of his books published. Then one day he got a letter in the mail saying he was ok and would stay free.

7 His Final Years After Harpers Ferry Frederick started to write again and give speeches. It was and Frederick had died from a heart attack or stroke in his house. People remember him as a very great leader as an abolitionist and a very good writer. He is still remembered as the person who escaped slavery and who helped end slavery and ended it forever. He was a very great man who never gave up on escaping slavery and life. He lost many friends and family members. Frederick Douglass will always be remembered forever.

8 Glossary Abolitionist – A person who wants to end slavery. Harpers Ferry – An arsenal in West Virginia. Frederick Douglass – An abolitionist who helped free the slaves. Abraham Lincoln – The sixteenth president who helped free the slaves. Arsenal – Military storage for guns and ammunition . Anna Murray – Frederick Douglass’s wife. John Brown – Led the battle at Harpers Ferry.
