Studied law with her father, an attorney, but wasn't allowed to practice law!! Helped organize: SENECA FALLS CONVENTION (1st women's rights meeting) Worked with Susan B. Anthony Wanted women to have: right to own property right to get divorced right to vote Helped found the National Woman Suffrage Association--NWSA 1st woman to run for Congress--rec'd only 24 votes out of 12,000!!!

became a teacher Goals equal pay for women teachers coeducation (boys & girls in same class) college education for women suffrage for women right of married women to control their earnings as a woman, forbidden from speaking at meetings leader in New York Women's Rights Association died before 19th amendment passed giving women the right to vote--known as the Susan B. Anthony amendment

3 Suffragist: Sojourner Truth
born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in NY children sold into slavery gained freedom when NY abolished slavery--30 yrs. old servant in NYC preached on street corners on women's rights "Children, I talk to God, and God talks to me." traveled around the country speaking to audiences suffered abuse and physical attacks

4 Abolitionist: Frederick Douglass
born a slave but escaped North to freedom in 1838. became a celebrated abolitionist speaker used his lecture fees to aid fugitive slaves worked in England to earn money to buy his freedom published North Star, anti-slavery newspaper headed the Rochester station of the underground railroad.

5 Abolitionist: William Lloyd Garrison
goal: IMMEDIATE end of slavery slavery a sin in the eyes of God believed in non-violent methods sued for libel, jailed and nearly lynched published anti-slavery newspaper, The Liberator organized American Anti-Slavery Society 1854--burned a copy of the Constitution because it did not outlaw slavery

6 Abolitionist: Harriet Tubman
born a slave in Maryland brutally beaten sisters sold escaped to Pennsylvania returned to guide her family to freedom famous conductor on Underground Railroad 19 trips...led 300+ slaves to freedom $40,000 reward for her capture--never caught called "Moses of her people"
