EQ: Who were some of the important people to shape the early abolitionist and women’s rights movements, AND how did they help their cause?

2 Abolitionist Movement
By 1804 most Northern states had outlawed slavery In 1807 Congress passed law stating importation of African slaves into US was illegal Abolitionists wanted to end slavery in South Synonym anyone? importation

3 Early Anti-Slave Efforts
In 1780’s Ben Franklin spoke out against slavery William Lloyd Garrison began an abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator, in 1831 John Quincy Adams introduced an amendment to end slavery in 1839, congress would not pass it John Quincy Adams

4 Frederick Douglass Born into slavery
Escaped to North (attempted a number of times before he was successful) famous abolitionist speaker Helped support women’s rights as well, they held many of the same beliefs as abolitionist supporters Frederick Douglass

5 Sojourner Truth Born into slavery Escaped with the help of Quakers
Devout Christian famous public speaker of abolitionist and women’s rights ideas Sojourner Truth

6 Harriet Tubman Born a slave Escaped to the North in 1849
Made over 19 journeys as a “conductor” helping Underground Railroad set other slaves free

7 Seneca Falls Convention
Inspired by Anti-Slavery movement, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton decided to hold Seneca Falls Convention for women’s rights in 1848 Mott and Stanton believed women should have same rights as men Frederick Douglass spoke at Convention in support

8 Inspiration from the Declaration
In planning for Seneca Falls Convention Stanton read Declaration of Independence Inspired, Stanton and other suffragettes wrote document modeled after Declaration of Independence, called the “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” Declaration stated “All men AND women are created equal”, listed complaints and resolutions of women

Anthony Suffragette (believed women should have the right to vote) Skilled organizer, helping to plan several conventions for women and African American rights As well as organizing Women’s movement Anthony also gave several speech’s about women’s suffrage (or right to vote) Susan B. Anthony
