Reading increased his determination to escape slavery
At 20 he escaped to Mass. and took the name Douglass to avoid arrest as a fugitive.

Moved to England to rally help for the abolitionists movement in America
Friends bought his freedom and he returned to U.S.

4. Freedom at Last
Established the North Star, a newspaper supporting the abolitionists movement
Worked for the Underground Railroad
Encouraged African Americans to fight for the Union in the Civil War
Served as a consultant for President Lincoln
Believed that an education was the best help for African Americans
