Aim: What arguments existed against the institution of slavery? Abolitionist is someone who supported the movement to end slavery.

William Lloyd Garrison Race: White Motivation: He believed slavery was a sin, and that sinners must be brought to recognize the error of their ways. Accomplishments: In 1830 Garrison started his antislavery newspaper, The Liberator Garrison also played an important role in organizing the national American Antislavery Society in 1833

Frederick Douglass Race: African-American Motivation: Douglass was born into slavery In 1838, Douglass escaped slavery in Maryland and moved to New York and then to Massachusetts, where he soon became an international figure in the fight against slavery. Accomplishments: Douglass lectured extensively against slavery in the US and in Great Britain. In 1847, Douglass started an anti-slavery newspaper called the North Star.

Harriet Tubman Race: African-American Motivation: Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland. Harriet Tubman was hurt trying to protect a run away slave Accomplishments: Became a conductor on the Underground Railroad Helped 100s of slaves reach freedom in the North and in Canada

Harriet Beecher Stowe Race: White Motivation: Father preached about the evils of slavery and drinking. Passing of the Fugitive Slave Law. Accomplishments: Wrote newspaper and periodical articles about slavery Wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin – exposed the American public to the horrors of slavery.
