Transport 2050 IP/11/372 Transport 2050: Commission outlines ambitious plan to increase mobility and reduce emissions (28/03/2011) Key goals  No more conventionally-fuelled cars in cities;  A 50% shift of medium distance intercity passenger and freight journeys from road to rail and waterborne transport;  All of which will contribute to a 60% cut in transport emissions by the middle of the century. 3

Transport 2050 IP/11/372  A roadmap for a competitive transport sector that increases mobility and cuts emissions;  Competitive transport systems are vital for Europe's ability to compete in the world, for economic growth, job creation and for peoples' everyday quality of life;  Curbing mobility is not an option;  To break the transport system's dependence on oil without sacrificing its efficiency and compromising mobility. 4

Multimodal Hubs: key research A complex interchange building and infrastructure nodes.  Intermodal ticketing;  Access to mobility impaired people; step-free access from interchange platform to platform;  Real time multimodal public information regarding traffic conditions of all the connected transport modes;  Real time proposals of alternative transport routes in case of local delays or disruptions;  Include the whole journey, from door to door, whatever transport modes used;  Safe and secure journey. 8

Cheap Infrastructures: key research 20 Cost competitive European transport infrastructure.  New business models to secure infrastructure funding;  Collaborative business approaches to reduce multimodal transport cost;  Advanced risk management of construction projects;  New construction methods;  New maintenance technologies;  Increased standardisation.

A complex task !

Conclusions 22  Coordination and optimisation of research is necessary to pave the way of the Future Infrastructures Networks of Europe (reFINE);  Innovation must go through demonstration facilities or construction sites;  Scale one mock-ups are needed to validate results of research before implementation.
