I. Developing environmentally friendly transport systems and means of transport Objective 1. New technologies and concepts for all surface transport modes (road, rail and waterborne) Objective 2. Advanced design and production techniques II Making surface transport safer, more effective and more competitive Objective 3. Re-balancing and integrating different modes of transport Objective 4. Increasing road, rail and waterborne safety and avoiding traffic congestion Priority 6.2 Sustainable surface transport

The Work Programme addresses the entire set of issues through 4 inter-linked elements: Advanced vehicle/vessel and infrastructure concepts Standardised design and manufacturing systems An Integrated Transport System aiming to: promote modal shift to cleaner and safer transport means increase safety and capacity of infrastructure A collaborative research system assured by the European Research Area (ERA)

Components of Sustainable Surface Transport Dynamic Navigation Physical Infrastructure Intermodality Vehicle Technology Mobility Services Energy Infrastructure Sustainable Mobility Educating road users

Gradually break the link between growth of transport and economic growth, principally in three ways : Re-balance of transport modes Eliminate bottlenecks Place users at the heart of transport policy Objectives of the White Paper

Objective I.1: New technologies and concepts for vehicles/vessels and infrastructure Objectives: ·Maintain or even improve the quality and efficiency of transport mobility ·Put on course the transition towards an environmentally caring transport system based on renewable fuels (20% fuel substitution by 2020) Focus: ·To smooth the transition from present situation towards an eco-friendly transport system (KYOTO, EURO V) ·To link research on vehicles with long term prospects on energy supply

Possible scenarios for sustainable transport 1.10 Organisation and development of less-polluting forms of transport 1.9 Renewable fuels Basic technological deliverables New fuels infrastructure 1.8 Integration of power-trains technologies : alternatines / renewable fuels zero/near zero 1.4/1.5 Holistic noise abatement 1.6 Assessment of environmental operation 1.7 Price internalisation Prospects for long-term energy supply Objective I.1 LINKS with 1.1.6.1
