LOUISIANA PURCHASE Napoleon had just lost a battle, trying to regain control over the Caribbean from slaves. American ambassador got an offer from Jefferson, to buy Louisiana, while talking with Charles Talleyrand, and Talleyrand takes it. France was at war with Great Britain, so Napoleon saw this as a way to get money for supplies. He also hope someone bigger, like the USA, would challenge Britain's power. Jefferson bought Louisiana for $15 million, and is making the USA bigger.

EXPEDITION TO LOUISIANA TERRITORY Meriweather Lewis and William Clark were sent on an expedition to find out more about the people and land, and also see if there were river routes to Pacific Ocean Along the way they met Sacagewea, a Shoshone, and her husband. They helped the explorers, and planted plants. Because the Shoshone helped the explorers along the way, they were very successful in their expedition.

ZEBULON PIKE Zebulon was a young army officer, that was sent to start the Red River. Zebulon is famous for trying to reach the summit of the mountain knows as Pikes Peak.

BARBARY PIRATES Barbary Pirates were people that would capture merchant ships. They took cargo, and held the crew members ranson. These attacks continued until the USS Constitution was made.

EMBARGO AND NON-INTERCOURSE ACT Britain had just violated U.S. neutrality Some of Americans wanted to stop trading, but others wanted to go to war. Jefferson was re-elected, and got congress to pass the Embargo Act (banned trading). Merchants and people who traded were unhappy, so Congress made Non-intercourse Act (couldn't trade with Britain, France, and their colonies)

BATTLE OF TIPPECANOE Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief, was angry with the way Natives were being pushed off their land. Tecumseh wanted all the Native Americans to join forces with him. William H. Harrison saw what Tecumseh, and tried to tell him about the Treaty of Greenville. Tecumseh went to go get other allies, and on his way there Harrison was attacking. Tecumseh village was destroyed and they lost.

WHO WERE THE PEOPLE THAT CALLED WAR AGAINST BRITAIN? Several young members of congress- called War Hawks- took the lead in calling for war against Britain.
