1 End of Jeffersons Presidency What international problem on the ocean concerns Jefferson? What was the purpose of the Embargo Act? Did it work? What was the purpose of the Non-Intercourse Act? (No, it did not do what you are thinking!) British Impressment- pressing or forcing people to serve in the army or navy. It was to stop British impressments, by banning trade with foreign countries, but it hurt the U.S. merchants more than Britain. Stopped trade with Great Britain, France and their colonies to stop those nations from taking U.S. ships.

2 Tecumseh Who is Tecumseh? Why is the Battle of Tippecanoe important? A Shawnee chief who hoped to unite American Indians in a war against the new Americans. William Henry Harrison (future president) attacks Tecumsehs village when he is not there and defeats the American Indians. Tecumseh lost much of his support.

3 Henry Clay and the War Hawks Who is Henry Clay? What were the War Hawks and what did they want? What was the result? A Senator from Kentucky who along with John C. Calhoun of South Carolina are leaders of the War Hawks. Favored war against Great Britain as they believed that it would allow the United States to expand. The new President James Madison under both trade pressure and also from the War Hawks requested Congress to decide what the nation should do. Congress decided for the first time to declare war.
