2 Election of 1800 John Adams and Charles Pickney- Federalist Versus Thomas Jefferson and Arron Burr – Democratic- Republican Jefferson Wins but got the same number of votes as Burr. The rules back then said that the person with the most votes became President and the one with the second most votes became Vice president

3 Election of 1800 continued The house had to decide if Jefferson or Burr would be President. Jefferson won on the 36 th vote. Later the 12 th amendment provided for separate ballots for president and vice president.

4 Jefferson’s Inauguration Jefferson walked to his Inauguration- later Jimmy Carter mimicked this historic moment by walking to his. Jefferson was saying that the president was no better than the common man.

6 Jefferson He let the Alien and Sedition Act expire Lowered Military Spending Reduced the size of the Army Kept the Federalist idea of a National Bank

7 Jefferson believed That government should do only primary things: –Protect citizens from foreign threat –Deliver the mail –Collect custom duties.

8 Marbury vs Madison Federalist legislators passed the judiciary Act of 1801 creating 16 new federal judgeships. Adams in the last day of his presidency filled them with Federalist. Some were so late that the order was written but not delivered. These judges were called midnight judges.

9 When Jefferson took office he told the Sec of state James Madison not to deliver them.. William Marbury demanded that the order be delivered and sued. The Supreme court refused to hear Marbury’s case.

10 The case of Marbury vs Madison Established the right of the supreme court of judicial review. Judicial review is the right of the Supreme Court to declare a law unconstitutional

14 Louisiana Purchase Spain owned New Orleans and Louisiana but could not keep Americans out. Spain traded Louisiana to France from Spain in order to get the problem off their backs. Before Spain traded they closed New Orleans to Americans. Americans in the west were very angered.

15 La. Purchase Jefferson sent Robert Livingston and James Monroe to try to buy New Orleans. Napoleon had tried to build a new French empire in America but Haitian Natives defeated the French. (he had hoped to launch his attack from Haiti)

16 La. Purchase With the dream of a new French empire dashed, French foreign minister offered the Americans not just New Orleans but all of the Louisiana Territory for 15 Million.

18 Jefferson’s dilemma Jefferson favored a strict construction of the Constitution. ( If it didn’t say you could do it you couldn’t) It did not say the president could buy foreign land. He purchased it because it was best for our country.

19 Lewis and Clark Jefferson asked congress to fund an expedition to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. Congress agreed. He chose Meriweather Lewis and William Clark to lead the expedition.. They called their group the Corps of Discovery.

20 Lewis and Clark 2 They used the Missouri River as the highway to the west. They used interpreters to talk to the Indians. After they crossed the Rockies they used the Colorado River. Sacagewa – was a shoshone Indian that acted as their guide.
