George Washington John Adams Thomas Jefferson Essential issues and events: Essential issues and events: Whiskey Rebellion- angry grain farmers rebel against a tax, the federal government sends the army to stop it British and French harassment of American ships, British impressment of American sailors Marbury vs. Madison: Supreme Court case that created the power of “judicial review”. XYZ Affair- Three French agents demand bribe money from the US before they can speak to the French government. French Revolution- France has a revolution and asks the US to join their war against Britain Louisiana Purchase: land deal between the U.S. and France that doubled the size of our country. Development of the first two political parties: Federalists-Democratic Republicans Alien and Sedition Acts-laws that many believed violated Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press Lewis and Clark, Pike Expeditions- sent to explore the Louisiana Territory, brought back very valuable information. Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions- written by Jefferson and Madison, declared Alien and Sedition Acts unconstitutional and introduced state’s rights Farewell Address- warning about the evils of political parties and dangers of foreign alliances Embargo Act of 1807: Law passed to hurt British trade but instead ended up ruining the American economy.

Era of Good Feelings: Time period when Monroe became President-the economy was very good, patriotism was very high, internal improvements War Hawks: Henry Clay, John C Calhoun, and Andrew Jackson-Congressmen that demanded war against the British. Adams-Onis Treaty: Treaty between the U.S. and Spain, made Florida a U.S. territory. Monroe Doctrine: warning to European nations that they would no longer be able to establish new colonies or regain old ones in the Western hemisphere. War of 1812: War between the U.S. Great Britain, caused by British interference in trade and encouraging attacks by Native Americans. The American System: plan by Henry Clay that called for internal improvements in transportation, more tariffs, and more national banks. Important Events of the War of 1812: Star-Spangled Banner written by Francis Scott Key, Battle of New Orleans won by Andrew Jackson
