4 What happened? Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied in the Electoral College Alexander Hamilton’s influence in Congress led to Congress selecting Thomas Jefferson as the 3rd President of the United States

5 Significance… Led to the passing of the 12th Amendment
Angered by Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr would soon challenge and kill him in a duel

7 Hamilton-Burr Duel Key Characters: Aaron Burr & Alexander Hamilton
What Happened?: Burr shoots and kills Hamilton in a duel Significance: Hamilton is dead and Burr’s political career is over

8 Marbury vs. Madison Key characters: William Marbury, James Madison, & John Marshall What Happened?: Court case between James Madison and William Marbury where Madison refused to deliver papers that would make Marbury Justice of the Peace Significance: Established Judicial Review- the ability for the Supreme Court to determine if a federal law is constitutional

Key Characters: William Clark, Merriweather Lewis, & Thomas Jefferson What Happened?: Lewis & Clark explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory Significance: Establish trade with western tribes No river that goes to Pacific Ocean Better understanding of western frontier

14 Barbary Wars Key characters: Thomas Jefferson, the US, and the Barbary States of Northern Africa What Happened: America went to war with Barbary pirates who demanded bribe money for access to Mediterranean Sea Significance: First declared war by United States fought overseas in another country

16 Embargo of 1807 Key Characters: the United States, Thomas Jefferson, France, & England What Happened: Jefferson ended trade with Britain and France by ordering that all American ships stay in port Embargo was meant to retaliate for British impressment of American Sailors and violating American neutrality Significance: Damaged the American economy and was an overall failure
