Vocabulary - Sentences These are the vocabulary words for this lesson. Read through carefully and print out if possible. Don't be overwhelmed. The information will be repeated throughout the module, and there will be practice exercises.

Vocabulary - Sentences parts of speech - types of words categorized by their use or how they function: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, article parts of a sentence - subject, predicate, object, complement, phrase, clause sentence - a group of words with a subject and a predicate and a complete thought. subject - the doer of the action in a sentence. Subjects must be a noun or a pronoun. noun - a person, place, thing, or idea. pronoun - a word that can take the place of a noun: he, she, it, they

Vocabulary - Sentences predicate - the action, the verb. A predicate cannot be an -ing word alone or an infinitive (to + verb) verb - a type of word that conveys action or state of being. All predicates in a sentence must be a verb. action verb - a verb that shows action: dances, moves, sits. state of being verb - a verb that shows a state of existence: is, appears. Must be followed by a complement, a word that describes or defines the subject. He is tall.

Vocabulary - Sentences complement - a type of adjective that describes the subject after a state of being verb. complete thought - a finished thought; a required aspect of a sentence. modifier - a word that describes another word. Adjectives and adverbs are modifiers. adjective - a word that describes a noun or pronoun adverb - a word that describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb. Often ends in -ly.

Vocabulary - Sentences misplaced modifier - a modifier that is not placed next to the word it is modifying. dangling modifier - a modifier that is not clearly associated with the word it is modifying. object - a word that receives the action. direct object - a word that receives the direct action of a verb. indirect object - a word that receives the indirect action of the verb.
