ScoringRulesThe CodeStrokesToss UpMMUThe Game

Who and when announces the score?

The server announces the game score before the game starts. The server announces the score within the game before each point.

What is another way to say zero? What are the numbers for the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd points of a game? How many points win the game?

Love. 15, 30, points wins the game

How many games are in a set? How many sets are in a match?

6 games to win a set (sometimes 7 for 7-5, sometimes 6 and a tiebreak for 7-6). 2 out of 3 sets.

What is “no-add” scoring?

When the score is (Deuce), the next point wins the game.

When is a tie-break played? Who serves and how many? How many points to win a tie-break? When do players change sides in a tie- break?

When the game score in a set is 6-6. Continue serving rotation; player that starts serving serves one point, then players serve two points each. 7 Points, win by 2. After every 6 points.

In tennis, is a ball that lands on the line, “IN” or “OUT”?

IN

If you do not see if a ball is “in” or “out” what do you do?

Play it, if you can. If you can’t play it, you have to call it “in”.

The ball hits the frame of your racquet and goes in. What is the ruling?

The ball is in play.

In doubles, do both of the partners have to see the ball “out” in order to call it “OUT”?

No, only one of you has to see it and call it “OUT”.

In doubles, when can partners change the side of the court that they receive the serve from and/or change the order in which they serve?

Only at the beginning of a new set.

When do you walk across another player’s court?

Only at the conclusion of their point.

You go back to retrieve a lob, run into the fence and trip. Do you call a “LET” and replay the point? Why or why not.

No, the fence, net posts, netting on indoor courts, and cracks in the court are pre-existing and are called “permanent fixtures”. Interference with them does not qualify as a “LET”.

When do you call a “LET” during a point?

Any time a ball, person, or another object (that is out of your control), enters your court and distracts you AND the point has not concluded.

You suspect your opponent calls your ball “out” when you thought it was “in”. What do you do?

You respectfully ask, “Are you sure?” If they say, “Yes”, you have to let it go. If they say, “No”, then it is your point. If it happens again, ask again. At the change over tell Coach.

Both you and your opponent have forgotten the score. What do you do?

Determine the most recent score you both agree upon and resume play from that point.

What are ground strokes?

Hitting the ball from beyond the service line, on your forehand or backhand side, after the ball has bounced.

What is it called when the ball is hit out of the air before it bounces?

A volley

What is the stroke called that you hit from the middle of your court, after the ball has bounced?

A Half-volley.

What is the ground stroke called that you hit before you go to the net to volley?

An approach shot.

Why is hitting topspin on ground strokes important?

As players hit more pace and power, top spin is necessary in order to keep the ball in the court.

When serving, how many tosses do you get before you have to hit the serve.

If you do not like your toss, you may let it bounce without penalty. However, there is a 30 second time limit in between points.

When the score is Deuce (40-40), who decides which side (deuce- side or ad -side) the point is played from?

The Receiver

When do players change sides of the court?

When the number of games played adds up to an odd number.

On the same side of the net, what are the two ways to name the left and right sides of the court.

Deuce Court = Forehand Court (side of the court each games start from, the side of the court you serve / receive from when the score is Deuce). Ad-Court = Backhand Court (side of the court you serve / receive if score is ad-in or ad-out during ad scoring).

Name three different grips that you can use when holding the racquet.

Semi-Western Forehand Western Forehand Eastern Forehand Eastern Backhand Two Handed Backhand Continental

What are the MMU expectations regarding Sportsmanship?

Sportsmanship Treat teammates, advisors, coaches, and opponents with respect. Establish a hard work ethic, but play within the rules. Exercise self-control at all times, setting an example for others to follow. Respect officials and accept their decisions without gesture or argument. Win with humility, lose without excuse. Always remember that it is a privilege to represent the school and community.

What are the MMU Transportation Guidelines

Students may provided own transportation to practices with the completion of a Transportation Form.

Name the three MMU Athletic Core Covenants.

Community Respect Excellence

When and why do you spin the racket? If you win the spin, name the three choices you have.

Before you begin the warm-up to determine who serves first. Serve, Receive,or Side

What happens if your first serve hits the top of the net and goes “in”? What happens if your second serve hits the net and goes “in”?

You get your first serve back. You only get your second serve.

Who and when can coach players during a match?

The coach, or a designated player. On change-overs ( except at 1- 0), and in between sets.

How can you win a point in tennis?

By hitting a winner / forcing your opponent to make an error. By your opponent making an unforced error.
