ANALYSIS OF PERFORMANCE TENNIS By Marga Chan

Rules and Regulations Players stand on opposite sides of the court before point begins (Server starts on the right every game, switch sides after every point) Players must serve behind the baseline When serving, ball must land in the service box or on the service box/line on the opposite side Ball can only bounce a maximum of one time when receiving or hitting the ball Singles players must try not to hit the ball beyond the singles baseline, or else point goes to the opponent Scores start at 0, then 15,30 & 40. If it reaches deuce (40-40), then the first person to win two points in a row wins the game To win a set, one must reach 6 games (or 7 if 7-5, or 7-6 at a tie-break) For women it is best of 3 sets, whereas for men it is best of 5 sets Baseline Singles Sideline Doubles Sideline Service Box Net

Potential Rule Breaking and Disqualifications Disqualifications can occur if there is physical or verbal abuse to anyone within the precincts of the tournament site. This could include: Officials Opponents Spectators Ball boys/girls Linesmen In tennis, a disqualification is known as a default and could be represented by labeling the person’s name with a ‘d’ on the upper right corner

Perfect Model Agnieszka Radwanska https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rC2_Oxw5JY&feature =youtu.be

Observation and Analysis Skill/ShotAnalysis Agility & Reaction Time Footwork is continuous, never stops moving, reacts quickly to every shot giving her enough time to return the shot CoordinationMoves her arms to return the ball and legs to keep support body weight at the same time Shot VarietyProduces several shots e.g. drop shot, lob, slices to keep her opponent running SpeedTravels to the ball very quickly to make an effective return BalanceConstantly keeps her feet equally distant from shoulders to prevent her from falling, tripping Forehand/BackhandConsistent speed throughout hitting the ball, with a smooth follow through and body movement to add extra power.

Imperfect Model – Amateur Match https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU0c5ooKtXk&feature= youtu.be

Observation and Analysis Skill/ShotAnalysis Agility & Reaction Time Good footwork when approaching shots, but doesn’t move continuously (in between points) so cannot react to each ball as quickly CoordinationAble to move arms and legs at the same time to return balls, but movement is very stiff Shot VarietyMost shots are only forehands and backhands. SpeedIsn’t able to travel to all returns quickly. Speed in between points is inconsistent BalanceConsistently keeps legs equally apart from shoulders to prevent falling Forehand/BackhandNo follow-through and speed so can’t execute power. Very inconsistent leading to unforced errors

Evaluation of Imperfect Model(s) StrengthsWeaknesses Able to keep balance consistently throughout the match Consistent serving, makes a majority of their first serves They have good & quick footwork when approaching the ball Lacks power in their shots, they don’t have a smooth and swift follow-through and don’t move their entire bodies when hitting the ball Doesn’t have steady movement, lack of consistent agility throughout the whole match which decreases reaction time Lacks speed when returning drop shots or short balls Serve doesn’t have a follow- through and they don’t move their whole bodies decreasing the availability for power

Drills to help imperfect model improve speed and agility https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx SHYYljNqw

Drills to help power Turn your body perpendicular to the wall with a medicine ball in your hands Keep shoulders back, tummy tight, and set the hips back Rotate the shoulders away from the wall with the medicine ball Extend your arms through and into the wall This increases muscular strength and increases strength of forehand and backhand as the drill allows you to rotate the shoulders and have a follow-through as you throw the ball to the wall 4 sets, 12 reps This helps strengthen the deltoids and abdominals to help the performer produce a more powerful serve This also give you the ability the fully rotate your shoulders and exerting more force 3 sets 10 reps https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=DnMdOWnct20 &feature=youtu.be

Links to Health Related Exercises Muscular Endurance – Allows player to move muscles repeatedly when hitting a forehand or backhand without getting tired Muscular Strength – Allows the player to exert a maximum amount of force when serving/ hitting a ball or returning volleys or overhead smashes Cardiovascular Fitness – The blood can supply continuously so that performer can have energy for movement Flexibility – Allows arms and legs to flex and extend when hitting the ball, serving, and running Body composition – Can affect speed, and power. Most tennis players are mesomorphs, so that they can hit the ball with maximum power.

Links to Skill Related Fitness Agility – Gives the performer the ability to change position quickly when preparing for a forehand or running for a drop shot Reaction Time – Affects the return on the performer when returning a serve or affects the server when hitting the ball when at a certain height Power – Movement of hitting the ball needs a certain amount of speed and strength to create difficulty for the opponent Speed – Allows the performer to run and effectively return drop shots, lobs, and balls that go on the opposite side of the court Balance – Prevents performer from tripping, falling Coordination – Allows performer to use two or more body parts smoothly and efficiently, especially when hitting volleys and overhead smashes (hand- eye coordination)
