Step 1 -Mark out where the cuts need to be made using a combination square and a pencil. -Using the letter punches and a ball peen hammer stamp your 3 initials into each of your three pieces. (ex. JFK) -Clamp the flat stock in the vise or to the work bench with a c-clamp and cut the material with a hack saw. File any sharp burrs or edges.

Step 2 -First lay out all construction lines with the combination square and a pencil. Then use the center punch and ball peen hammer to locate the centers of the holes. -Make sure you check your lay out with the instructor or TA before drilling. -Using the drill press, drill the holes with the correct size drill bits. The metal needs to be secured tightly in the vise. Be sure to use cutting oil to keep the drill bits cool. -File any burrs produced from drilling.

Step 3 Step 4 - Using either the plasma cutter or oxy-acet. torch, cut between the two 5/16” holes to make the slot. Chip the slag and file the slot smooth. - With the hacksaw cut two 2” long tubes to make the hinges.

Step 5 Step 6 Step 7Step 8 - Cut a 9” long piece of round stock. -Using the oxy-acet. torch and a fixture, heat and bend the loop. - Cut the loop so both sides are even. Then with the remaining round stock, cut a 5.50” piece. This is the inner hinge piece and must be perfectly straight.

Step 8 -Mark the round stock where the edges of the flat stock will be when it is welded. -Tack weld both corners so the pieces are straight, then completely weld. -Line up the round stock loop with the 9/32” holes and weld the back side. Step 9

Step 10 -Insert tubing over the round stock and center on the base plate. -Tack weld the tubes on and check to make sure it it’s straight. -Complete the welds on both sides of the tubing. Do not make welds too big or it will burn through and weld the hinge together. -File down sharp corners and edges -Remove any welding spatter -Finish by spray painting both pieces.
