Presentation transcript:

The Glorious Revolution England suffers decades of struggle over 2 issues: 1.What institution should have final authority: Parliament or Monarch?? 2.What religion would prevail over England?? James II is devout Catholic (Parliament does not want a Catholic King)

The Coup English Nobles invite Dutch leader, William of Orange and wife Mary (Protestant daughter of James II) to come to England

The Glorious Revolution William & Mary arrive with army James II flees to France Little opposition and Bloodshed = Glorioussss!!!!

The Deal 1689 Parliament offers the throne to William and Mary IF they accept The English Bill of Rights creating a system of government based on law & a freely elected Parliament (Foundation for American Bill of Rights)

English Bill of Rights Ensured authority of Parliament over monarchy Required the monarch to summon Parliament regularly Gave the House of Commons the “power of the purse” Monarch could not interfere in Parliamentary debates or suspend laws Restated traditional rights (trial by juryP Abolished excessive fines & cruel punishments Affirmed the principle of habeas Corpus

Toleration Act 1689 Parliament grants Puritans, but not Catholics, the right to free public worship England becomes one of the most tolerant nations in Europe

Divine Right Theory Ends By deposing one king and establishing another, Parliament destroys Divine Right William rules by the grace of Parliament – not God!

John Locke Two Treatises of Government 1690 Criticized absolutism/Defends Glorious Rev. Humans are born with Natural Rights : Life, Liberty, & Property

Mutual Obligation People have a Contract with the government to protect their rights Government protects the rights of the people who act reasonably toward government If the government does not protect an individual’s rights, the people are justified in rebelling and forming a new government

The Glorious Revolution - Not Your Typical Revolution 1 st - Non Violent – a “bloodless revolution” 2 nd - Nobility and wealthy members of Parliament demanding rights – not the middle and lower classes
