How did England become a constitutional monarchy?

2 I. James II: Absolute Monarch
A. James II was a Catholic & believed in “Divine Right” B. James II begins displaying Catholic symbols & promoting Catholics in Govt 1. Parliament protests, James II dismisses Parliament C. Several Members of Parliament approach his daughter, Mary, about overthrowing her father 1. Mary’s husband William of Orange, a Dutch prince, agrees to send his army 2. Instead of fighting, James II flees for France D. 1688: The “bloodless” overthrow of James II is called the Glorious Revolution

3 II. The Constitutional Monarchy
A. 1689: William & Mary are crowned co-rulers of England & Scotland B. Parliament drafts English Bill of Rights: 1) Monarch cannot suspend Parliament or laws 2) “” can’t tax without Parliament’s consent 3) “” cannot interfere with free speech 4) Parliament’s consent needed for war C. William & Mary agree  England is a Constitutional Monarchy III. Cabinet System A. Cabinet: created to solve disputes between Monarch & Parliament B. Prime Minister is elected, will lead both the Cabinet & Parliament 1710: England (which includes Wales) and Scotland combine their Parliaments to form the nation of Great Britain
