Sexual Wellness, Chapter 10: Objective: Be able to describe healthy Sexual behavior * Be able to Describe what Factors are Important for Healthy sexual behavior

What is the definition of sexual health? The World Health Organization (WHO) defines sexual health as the “state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being related to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction and infirmity.

Sexual Health Requires a positive, respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of being forced, discriminated against and violence.

What is Sexuality? How we dress How we groom ourselves How we feel about ourselves through self-esteem and body image

Why is body image important? It is a person’s opinions, thoughts, and feelings about his or her own body. Having a positive body image means appreciating your body for its capabilities and accepting of imperfections. If a person becomes too negatively focused on their body this can lead to eating disorders and other addictions.

How does puberty affect body image? During the teen years it is easy to plant the seeds in our minds for our body image and our beliefs about our body will carry on into adulthood. Why does this happen? Mainly because our bodies are changing so much during these times. It is usually an emotionally charged time.

Picture perfect What kind of pressures does society put on you and your body image? How does society create these pressures?

Building a better, healthier body image: Recognize your strengths A strong body does not translate always into athletic success. Men have a bigger challenge in this area. You may wish to try a new sport like marshall arts, fencing or golf. It helps to develop individual accomplishments. Try to find some physical activity that you can feel passionate about.

Don’t say negative things: About your body or your abilities Write down three positive affirmations about yourself, like: I have great eyes I have great hair I am a kind person I am a consistent student

Respect yourself Use your time wisely in class, don’t use your cell phone, or play on the computer! Take care of your skin, teeth and hair. All these can build positive body image and self-esteem. I think all of you are doing a great job with grooming!
