The Age of Imperialism

 The dominations by one country of the political, economic and cultural life of another country

 Colony  A possession that the imperial power controls directly  Sphere of Influence  A region in which the imperial power claims exclusive investment of trading rights  Protectorate  A country who has its own government but whose policies are directed by the imperial power

 Nationalism  A nation increased its power and prestige by winning an over seas power  Political/Military Strategy  Seize an area to prevent a rival from expanding  Economically  Industrialists wanted resources and markets People wanted money  Religion  Make people civilized  Social Darwinism  Strong nations conquer weaker ones

 As European nations became industrialized they looked overseas from new markets and resources  See map – between 1870 – 1914 the entire continent was under European rule  Except Ethiopia and Liberia  This scramble for Africa brought Europe to the brink of war

 A conference in 1884 – 1885 in Berlin  Germany set boundaries in Africa This was done without consulting the people of Africa

 Africa was not well explored until the 1800’s  Africa was full of disease and resistance – this prevented expansion  Medical discoveries to cure diseases were discovered  Yellow fever and malaria  Europeans develop the maxim gun  Makes movement easier  600 rounds per minute
