Biomes and Climate.
Biomes. Biomes Biomes are a group of ecosystems with similar climates (temperature and rainfall) and organisms.
Biomes A drought makes vegetation scarce. What is a biome?  Group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms.
Biomes. A biome is one of Earth’s large ecosystems, with its own kind of climate, soil, plants, and animals.
Biomes Terrestrial Only
The Biosphere Copy the stuff in Blue.. Biosphere The portion of the Earth that holds life Includes all organisms and the environments they live in.
Climates By Robin Close. Temperature and weather change every day. It is warmer in the summer and colder in the winter. Sometimes it is wet, and sometimes.
Ecosystems Ch.21.
Region of the biosphere that has similar communities and climate.

Ecosystems in our world

Tundra Cold Desert-like Conditions…very dry Average Winter temp. is -30 degrees F Average Summer temp. is 37-54 deg. F. Alaska is in the Arctic Tundra http://library.thinkquest.org/11353/tempforest.htm

Pictures from the Tundra http://www.marietta.edu/~biol/biomes/tundra.htm http://room42.wikispaces.com/Tundra+Animals worldcoops.info

Plants & Animals in the Tundra During the summer months many insect eggs hatch. Due to the vast number of insects, migrating birds come to feed. Ravens, hawks, and owls are also common. Caribou, arctic hare, mink, wolf, brown bear, reindeer, and polar bear are also common.

Temperate (Deciduous) Forest We don’t have to travel too far to see this forest. We live in this area!!!! http://library.thinkquest.org/11353/tempforest.htm http://inchinapinch.com/hab_pgs/terres/d_forest/td_forest.htm

Temperate (Deciduous) Forest Seasonal Weather Warm summers Cold winters Leaves change color and fall from trees http://www.kidsgeo.com/geography-for-kids/0170-deciduous-forest.php

Temperate (Deciduous) Forest Animals must adjust, or adapt, to cold winters and hot summers Fox White-tailed deer Cardinal Black Bear and Brown Bear

Desert The desert is the driest ecosystem on Earth It can be found around the equator There is almost no rainfall in the desert www.zastavki.com/.../wallpaper-5166.htm http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://room42.wikispaces.com/file/view/Desert_Biome_map.gif/30497307/Desert_Biome_map.gif&imgrefurl=http://room42.wikispaces.com/Desert&usg=__DGz7L9cmwUPxR35cq44K2iH5E4c=&h=221&w=363&sz=6&hl=en&start=1&zoom=1&itbs=1&tbnid=5K0OfI3w5mGAQM:&tbnh=74&tbnw=121&prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddesert%2Bbiome%2Bmap%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1

Desert Plants must adapt to the dry, hot climate. Some plants have thick waxy leaves, some have large root systems and some have water storage systems like the cactus. Other plants include Sagebrush, Joshua trees, and Mesquite trees. http://www.qtours.com/california/about_california/destinations/deserts.html oldpueblowedding.blogspot.com windows2universe.org

Desert Animals that live in the desert are usually light colored to blend in with their surroundings. What do we call this? They are most active at night and around dusk to avoid the heat.

Desert Animals that live in the desert are: Jackrabbits Owls Snakes Lizards Tortoises

Tropical Rainforest An average of 50-260 inches of rain falls in the tropical rainforest each year. Rainforests are hot and wet. It rarely gets hotter than 93 degrees F and rarely gets cooler than 68 degrees F. http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/rainforest.htm

Tropical Rainforest The tropical rainforest has more types of trees than any other area in the world. About ¼ of all medicines we use come from rainforest plants. The rainforest is full of tall thin trees http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.all-creatures.org/hope/gw/Amazon_rainforest_layers.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.all-creatures.org/hope/gw/02_Amazon_beauty.htm&usg=__Z2QWoQknWNAHCcROY1itsEcgCx8=&h=480&w=327&sz=92&hl=en&start=1&zoom=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=WpiFgTdRbPaFvM:&tbnh=129&tbnw=88&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtropical%2Brainforest%2Blayers%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1

The tropical rainforest is full of rich plant-life. There are layers to the rainforest http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.all-creatures.org/hope/gw/Amazon_rainforest_layers.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.all-creatures.org/hope/gw/02_Amazon_beauty.htm&usg=__Z2QWoQknWNAHCcROY1itsEcgCx8=&h=480&w=327&sz=92&hl=en&start=1&zoom=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=WpiFgTdRbPaFvM:&tbnh=129&tbnw=88&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtropical%2Brainforest%2Blayers%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1

Tropical Rainforest Insects are the largest group of animals living in the tropical rainforest Other animals that live in the rainforest include monkeys and birds Animals typically live on a diet full of fruit, they are often brightly colored and can handle the hot wet weather

Grasslands Grasslands have a lot of…..grass They do not get enough rain to sustain communities of trees Wildflowers also grow in grasslands http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.kazakhstanbirdtours.com/images/steppe%2520grassland.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.kazakhstanbirdtours.com/steppe.htm&usg=__q8SdppTHnt4IZ0_Ab5lKJV3xF3A=&h=375&w=500&sz=30&hl=en&start=16&zoom=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=kMQ-3xrRlP0hNM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dgrassland%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1 http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/grasslands.htm

Grassland Animals that live on the grassland are “grazers” they graze on the grasses and wildflowers Coyotes, bison, bobcats, and wild turkeys are some of the animals that live on the grasslands. http://library.thinkquest.org/11353/ecosystems.htm http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.netstate.com/states/symb/gamebirds/images/wild_turkey.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.netstate.com/states/symb/gamebirds/ma_wild_turkey.htm&usg=__1v1o7obtiTikkS2jec-RNNZbHog=&h=300&w=300&sz=32&hl=en&start=1&zoom=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=4bNQ5elT5iC_JM:&tbnh=116&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwild%2Bturkey%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1 http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://coyotewildmag.com/images/coyotesummer.jpg&imgrefurl=http://coyotewildmag.com/2008/august/abbott_nomis_wish.html&usg=__JjbN8r0aTSiDZPhSvnA1LuQweVc=&h=600&w=800&sz=195&hl=en&start=10&zoom=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=DxBWmLWBSPKl-M:&tbnh=107&tbnw=143&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcoyote%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1

Aquatic Oceans, lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers are all aquatic ecosystems. Aquatic ecosystems cover almost 73% of the earth’s surface. http://www.marietta.edu/~biol/biomes/oceans.htm

Aquatic Algae and corals live in aquatic ecosystems. Snakes, beetles, frogs, fish, and sharks live in aquatic ecosystems too.

Congratulations!! You’ve completed your trip around the world on your ecosystem adventure.
