CHAPTER 14, PAGE Respiratory Disorders

Overview 1. Definition 2. Recognize and describe the most commonly occurring disorders of the respiratory system. 2. Learn about different activities, techniques, and exercises, including breathing programs, for individuals with respiratory disorders that physical therapists, educators and fitness trainers can use.

What are Respiratory Disorders? First…what is the respiratory system? (Encarta Dictionary) Respiratory Disorders?

Most Common Respiratory Disorders Asthma  A chronic disease in which periodic attacks are followed by periods of remission of the symptoms  Cause: swelling of the mucous membrane lining the bronchial tubes, excessive secretion of mucous and spasms of the bronchial tubes.  Extrinsic Asthma  Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA)  Treatment: physical activity, American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that asthmatic children be encouraged to participate in physical education and sport programs. Inhalers and prescribed drugs. Hay Fever  An allergic disease caused by sensitivity to specific substances in the air (mold, pollen).  Effects only the upper level of the respiratory system.  Can be a possible precursor to asthma.  Treatment: Avoid the allergen and use antihistamines or other drugs.

Most Common Respiratory Disorders Cystic Fibrosis  An abnormality or inadequacy of some hormone or enzyme of the body that affects the excretion of mucus, saliva, and perspiration.  Cause: heredity; inherited as a Mendelian or recessive trait; both parents must carry the trait.  Interfere with the processes of breathing and digestion.  Treatment: Procedures to drain liquids from the lungs, dieting to avoid fatty foods and ensure ingestion of large amounts of protein. Bronchitis  An inflammation of the bronchi of the lungs.  Cause: the long term inhalation of irritants such as dust and tobacco fumes.  Symptoms:  Acute  Chronic  Treatment: antibiotics and medications to loosen phlegm and postural drainage.  qh79BKU qh79BKU

Needs and Adjustments IEP’s and Exercise Prescriptions/Programs  Physical Educators  Physical Therapists  Fitness Trainers Deep breathing exercises Increase strength  Breathing Activity!! Postural drainage positions (p. 414)

Needs and Adjustments To keep students motivated and engaged in physical activity, teachers can:  Develop a social acceptance Paper towels and tissue Positive attitude  Teach techniques of conscious relaxation.
