Respiratory Problems Diseases and Disorders of the Respiratory System

The Itis’s SINUSITIS: -infection and inflammation of the sinuses. -they swell and become blocked

Tonsillitis -inflammation of the tonsils due to infection -often seen with strept bacteria

Laryngitis Inflammation of the larynx from colds and upper respiratory infections Causes hoarseness or loss of voice

Bronchitis Inflammation of the lining of the bronchiole tubes –Acute: follows colds or flu when bacteria from nose and throat invade the trachea and bronchi –Chronic: coughing and spitting up mucus lasts at least 3 months out of the year Usually due to smoking

A. Pleurisy and B. Tuberculosis A. Inflammation of the pleural membrane B. Attacks alveoli that will cut off circulation causing death of the tissue. Poisons and bacteria stread throughout the body and can be fatal.

1. Asphyxiation 2.Common Cold 3.Influenza “flu” 1. Suffocation due to obstruction of air passages: no oxygen, inability of blood to circulate 2. Caused by several viruses that break down’s the body’s immune system- no cure for the common cold. It runs its course 3. Contagious viral disease that begins in the respiratory tract causing fever, headache, vomiting and diarrhea

Pneumonia Build up of fluid in the bronchioles and alveoli –Bacterial: strikes suddenly: can cause death –Viral: “walking pneumonia”: follows a severe neglected cold: often goes undetected

Asthma Difficulty breathing due to swelling of mucus membranes in the bronchioles and muscles spasms in walls of the tubes Usually due to allergic reactions, dust, pollen or a cold, sore throat or bronchitis Some attacks can be exercise induced

Emphysema Progressive, chronic disease seen in middle aged and older due to heavy smoking. Alveoli expand and burst or “pop” causing permanent damage that reduces the amount of O2 the body can take in.

Lung Cancer Most common cause of death from cancer. Three quarter of lung cancer is from smoking This causes a chronic, painful cough, bloody mucus, fatige and weightloss.

Respiratory Wrap Up Do Not Smoke! Did I mention…DO NOT SMOKE!!

Instead…. EXERCISE!! EAT A BALANCED DIET! SLEEP! …you’ll feel GREAT!
