 Exposition: ◦ Characters:  Jonas- is the protagonist in our novel. He is an eleven year old boy and lives with: his father who is a Nurturer, his mother who holds a prominent position at the Department of Justice and younger sister Lily. ◦ Setting:  The story takes place in a tight knit community and Jonas is feeling apprehensive about the Ceremony of Twelve. He states, “I know there’s really nothing to worry about,” Jonas explained, “and that every adult has been through it. I know you have, Father, and you too, Mother. But it’s the Ceremony that I’m apprehensive about. It’s almost December,” (p.9). I believe Jonas’s feeling of being apprehensive can be possible foreshadowing in this novel and wonder if he really should be worried.

 Personal Reaction: So far this novel is intriguing. I wonder what lies ahead for Jonas or if his friend Asher will continue to get in trouble for breaking the strict rules within this community.  Quote: One quote in particular that I thought was interesting was when Jonas says, “I’m feeling apprehensive,” he confessed, glad that the appropriate descriptive word had finally come to him,” (p.9) Most children do not dread their birthday, so I am curious why Jonas might be dreading this particular ceremony and what his job might be.
