“Unless….someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Dr. Suess The Lorax

Purpose: For students to research and develop a positive advocacy campaign educating the school community about the link between recycling resources and the connection to protecting wildlife. RETHINK RECYLING!

Why should we care? Biodiversity is key for healthy ecosystems and the planet. Ethical considerations- our impact has negatively affected other species Recycling and reusing saves our natural resources and conserves them for future generations.

Steps to a positive advocacy campaign/public awareness campaign 1.Identify Issue- RETHINK RECYCLING 2.Conduct research-Wildlife research papers 3.Define problem- How can we get GV/GV community to recycle more? 4.Identify solutions- developing message to convey to a specific audience 5.Public Education- The campaign, which has its own step by step process

Ideas:

Steps to accomplish: Research what is not being recycled at home, at school or in the community. How can recycling save energy and wildlife? Create a positive RETHINK RECYLING campaign to engage families, the school and community to action. We need to be specific in our objectives, measure our results (quantifiable) and increase recycling.

Part Two: Proposal of Idea for campaign Brainstorm ideas of how to create a positive awareness campaign How is the best way to get this information out there? What is my audience? What information is important to convey?

Examples of Successful Campaigns Variety of IdeasExposure can lead to success m/national_pit_bull_awarene ss_day.htmlhttp:// m/national_pit_bull_awarene ss_day.html rium.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp xhttp:// rium.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp x w-article/15-Attention- Grabbing-Environmental-Ad- Campaigns-129http://designerscouch.org/vie w-article/15-Attention- Grabbing-Environmental-Ad- Campaigns-129

Tentative Timeline: Due tomorrow- YOUR Proposal and we will peer review in class tomorrow. Vote for best ideas- Contest completed by first week of March.

Today you are to develop an ACTION PLAN: Each student will write a one-page proposal for a positive advocacy campaign for the GV community. Your plan should include a specific objective(s), how you will accomplish the objective, key elements to your plan, who is the audience you are proposing your plan to. And even a step by step on how to accomplish. We will evaluate these tomorrow and come up with a plan for all classes.

Important Dates: Zoo trips week of Feb 23 rd Weds/Fri of that week-class may be divided. GV event day: On March 5 th during lunch period. What can we do?
