4 In your notebooks answer the following…… What actions do you take to protect your health? Write down at least 5 things you do regularly to stay healthy…. (You have 10 minutes to complete)

5 1.01 Factors and Strategies that Promote Personal Development Development – continues & changes during the TEEN years. Areas of change Moral Physical Mental Emotional Social “HORMONES” – influence & effect these changes.

6 PEERS – people your own age. Stronger social need to be with PEERS in teen years. PEERS often influence choices & behaviors. STRESS – a bodies response to the demands being put on it Help deal with it by: express emotions in a POSITIVE way talking about problems Exercising - it can help! 1.01 Factors and Strategies that Promote Personal Development

9 Jigsaw Activity…… Each group will be given a piece of text to cover. (chapter 2) You will then create an informative & creative poster (20 minutes) We will then share & have put together all the puzzle pieces!

11 Finish your poster if not already completed. Bring me your notebook, word search & Jigsaw Poster up ONE AT A TIME! Teamwork Activity Working in groups (your choice), create a symbol with 3 parts representing the physical, emotional/mental & social aspects of health. Each group will share their results with the class by answering the following questions: 1)Why did you choose this symbol? 1)Is one aspect of health more important than the others? 1)How do all aspects of health work together? (Answers to the question will be written and have names of ALL group members…)

12 Physical…… Health issues, substance abuse, addictions (shopping, gambling, eating, etc.) Mental & Emotional…… Abuse, dependency issues, depression, eating disorders, suicide.

13 Social & Community issues.. Lack of social opportunities Living environment Socioeconomic status Environmental issues….. Air, industry, land, water Legal issues….. Crime, family issues, truancy

14 ENVIRONMENT….We are affected by what surrounds us! Conserve resources Avoid air pollution (fuel, exhaust, noise) Reduce Garbage….pre-cycle, recycle, reuse Be informed about environmental issues… Water, land & air pollution, etc.

15 LEGAL ISSUES……. Crime costs society MONEY! (prisons, therapy for victims) Most violent acts are about controlling someone or overpowering them! Abuse ALMOST ALWAYS lowers the victims self- esteem

16 Brainstorm times & events in a normal day that are most stressful. Select several stress-inducers that are common to many students. Plot them on a 24 hour timeline. Rate them high or low according to the level of stress they produce. Make sure your name, date & class are on the paper so you get credit for the activity……..

17 Active listening (Show me) Concentrate on what is being said Use “I” messages “I get upset when you don’t pay attention” vs. “You never listen to me” Communication Two-way process of sending and receiving information Feedback “You must have been really upset by that” vs. “Well, I would have told her to jump in the lake!”

19 Be willing to talk out issues Avoid power struggles (causes conflicts) Mediation Be aware of personality differences: accept differences in people Peer mediation Identify problems so you can find remedies Use “I” messages when discussing problems
