CERAMIC ART HISTORY Objectives: We will discuss ceramic art history. We will create a slab sculpture in groups. Complete and use Cornell Notes.

EARLY HISTORY First methods were hand constructed. Slab construction around for around 4000 years. Ancient Greek cities and Egyptian pyramids. Utilitarian uses began around 9000 BCE Before this use was for rituals.

FRANCES SIMCHES , Modern American artist, Michigan Teacher and artist. Developed technique for building on large scale. Contrasting forms represent her work.

MICHAEL MOORE Born 1968 Contemporary Ireland Inspired by geology and architecture.

ACTIVITY TIME! Per table: 3 sheets paper 2 Scissors Tape Make a slab sculpture with table members Write something you learned on each “slab” Requirements: Use negative space At least 3 different shapes Curves

CLEAN UP! Throw away scraps. Put away scissors. Return to seats. Keep “Sculptures” at tables.
