1 Our starting point… Looking at the course outline on the syllabus, which field of engineering interests you the most? Why?

2 Group Activity On a piece of paper, define what you think engineering is. Find a partner and share your definition. Work together to come up with a single definition. Find another pair and share your definition. Work together to come up with a single definition.

3 Engineering Problem Keeping your same groups, each group will be given a standard business card. Design a means of allowing each group member to walk or step through the card (must remain in one piece). You can only use scissors to affect the card’s shape. No tape…no glue…no other adhesive or clamp can be used.

4 Pre-Class Wednesday 1-4-12
In the engineering problem yesterday (walk through a business card), what would have made the solution easier?

5 History of Engineering
Chapter 1

6 When did engineering begin?
No date, but idea of improving life has been around since recorded history Pre-historic times were hard for humanity, as they worked to survive Innovations began by improving hunting tools Improved agriculture provided more food The reason man began to thrive and not just survive: engineering Let's look at standards...

7 Engineering Empires Stone Bronze Iron Egyptians Mesopotamians Greeks
Romans All modern countries are “engineering” equipped because of these groups of people. Stone Bronze Iron

8 Periods of Invention Turn to page 6 and continue to page 9
Look at the time periods of invention What do you notice about the time periods and the number of breakthroughs? Find the invention/breakthrough from each time period that is most important to you today. Why? What do you think the next breakthrough will be? Get in groups with people that have at least 5 inventions in common with you. Discuss the next breakthrough. Are they similar?

9 Pre-Class Wednesday 8-22-12
Name one of the Engineering Empires discussed in class yesterday.

10 The Tower of Paper Materials 1 piece of copy paper
Procedures Brainstorm how to build the tower. Discuss and record ideas (include drawing). Obtain materials. Construct tower out of paper and tape only. Must stand (no assistance) for at least 30 seconds. Observe/record: Design strengths. Design weaknesses. What did you do well? What could you have done better? Materials 1 piece of copy paper 30 cm of tape (your choice) Scissors Objective In groups of three, build the tallest, freestanding tower out of paper.

11 How many tiles are on the floor of this classroom?
Objective: to practice prediction and measuring techniques Procedures: Predict the # of tiles. Detail the technique to find the # of tiles. Use the technique to find the # of tiles.

12 Not a girl’s name and has 5 letters
Pre-Class Friday You have to find the odd ones out in the groups of words, but there's a catch. Each group of words has TWO words which do not belong. Can you find them both? Lily - Jane - Tulip - Rose Not the name of a flower Not a girl’s name and has 5 letters
