A Speech to the Haters

  1. Quickly go to your seat.  2. Get out a sheet of paper & pencil.  3. Write down the following: If you could write a speech to your “haters” (those who talk bad about who you are), what would the following details be?  A) What about you would they “hate” on?  B) Who would these haters be?  C) What thing(s) would you say to them? (this can be a bullet-pointed list) Bell Work – 5 mins.

  Students will compose & (potentially) present a speech tailored to a directed audience.  Standard : Convey a clear and distinct perspective, such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning – style is appropriate to purpose and audience Target:

  We will watch the summative speech Olive Penderghast gives to her haters at the end of “Easy A.”  We will then compare Olive’s story to Hester’s “haters.”  You will then turn your bullet list into a sincere speech to your “haters.”  SOME will present these speeches at the end of class. Agenda

  We’ll watch a speech to the haters now. As we watch, write down 3 things Olive says to her haters. Easy A

  What things did Olive say to her haters?  Who were Hester’s haters?  How did they hate?  What did they learn about her by the end of the novel? Written & a Comparison

  During the next 8 minutes you will quickly write a speech directed to your “haters.” It must be sincere, and it must be appropriate.  Some of you will come to the podium and present your speeches. Think now if you don’t mind being one of those. Your Turn – 8 minutes

  Who’s coming to the podium? Speech-Giving
