What is bullying?  MISD definition: 1.To have the effect of physically harming a student, damaging a student’s property, or placing a student in reasonable fear to harm 2.To be severe, persistent, or persuasive to create intimidating, threatening or abusive educational environment for a student

Types of Bullying  Physical – involving parts of the body  Emotional/Psychological – verbal threats, teasing, taunting  Cyber – through technological devices (texting, Facebook, etc…)

Bullying  Bullying usually involves a bully, a victim and a witness (bystander). Witnesses are just as responsible as the bully for the bullying activity.

Bullying  Bullying can include saying or writing inappropriate things about a person, teasing, deliberately excluding a person from activities, threatening or hurting a person and/or making a person do something against their will.

Who is a Bully? 1.A person who doesn’t care if bad things happen to other people. 2.A person who doesn’t feel bad when others are hurt. 3.A person who likes to be the center of attention. 4.A person who thinks others deserve to be bullied. 5.A person who may be bullied at home by family members.

Why do students bully? 1.To gain power 2.To get attention / become popular 3.To get material things 4.Due to problems at home 5.To copy another person

Types of People who are often targeted by Bullies 1.Students who are smaller 2.Students who don’t have many friends 3.Students who don’t stick up for themselves or get an adult for help 4.Most anybody if they think they can get away with it!

Effects of Being Bullied 1.Feeling scared, alone, sad 2.Don’t like school 3.Headaches/stomachaches 4.Not feeling good about themselves

How Do I Get Help?  Ask an ADULT Teacher Counselor Principal

Stop - A- Bully 1.Tell the Bully to STOP! 2.Use an Assertive Voice 3.Make Eye Contact 4.Do NOT reply to Texts, Facebook or IM’s 5.Report it to an ADULT! 6.Make Friends and Stick Together! ALWAYS BE SAFE!
