4 LEGAL DEFINITION OF BULLYING: Bethel Public Schools District Board Policy 3207 Definition Harassment, intimidation or bullying is a persistent, intentional, electronic, written, verbal, or physical act that:  Physically harms a student or damages the student’s property; or  Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s education; or  Is so severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening education environment; or  Has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of school.

5 A student is being bullied when another student or group of students:  Says mean or hurtful things or makes fun of him or her or calls them mean or hurtful names.  Completely ignores him or her from their group of friends or leaves them out of things on purpose.  Hit, kick push, shove around, or lock him or her in a room.  Tell lies or spread false rumors about him or her or send mean notes and try to make other students dislike the student.

6 BULLYING IS…  Done on purpose and it is difficult for the student being bullied to defend him or herself.  When a student is teased repeatedly in a mean and hurtful way. IT IS NOT BULLYING …  When teasing is done in a friendly and playful way.  When two students of equal strength or power argue or fight.

7 What are different types of bullying? Brainstorm as a class the types of bullying that you think takes place.

8 PHYSICAL Hurting someone’s body. VERBAL Hurting someone’s feelings. SOCIAL / EMOTIONAL Hurting someone in a relationship sense. CYBER Hurting someone through email, text, chat, website posts, or digital messages or images sent through cellular devices.

9 Which types of bullying do you think are most common at our school?

10 BYSTANDERS Those who watch bullying happen or hear about it. Discuss as a whole group… What is a hurtful bystander? What do they look like? What do they do? What is a helpful bystander? What do they look like? What do they do?

11 HURTFUL BYSTANDERS  Instigate the bullying by prodding the bully to begin.  Encourage the bullying by… Laughing Cheering Making comments that further stimulate the bully.  Join in the bullying once it has begun.  Passively accept bullying by watching & doing nothing Majority of bystanders HELPFUL BYSTANDERS  Directly intervene by… Discouraging the bully. Defending the victim. Redirecting the situation away from bullying.  Get help by…  Rallying support from peers to stand up against bullying.  Reporting the bullying to adults.

12 What is worse, being totally ignored or being constantly taunted? What do you think is the most difficult type of bullying to stop? Why? What type of bullying do we most commonly see at GK? Why?

13 In groups of 3-4, discuss how you would refuse to be bullied in the following scenario. Scenario #1 Over the past few weeks, a girl has been spreading rumors about you on Twitter.

14 In groups of 3-4, discuss how you would refuse to be bullied in the following scenario. Scenario #2 A boy on the bus says something mean under his breath to you every time you walk by him.

15 In groups of 3-4, discuss how you would refuse to be bullied in the following scenario. Scenario #3 Whenever you walk by a certain group of students in the hall, they stop talking and stare at you.

16  Determine if it is safe for you to refuse. Unsafe situations o The person bullying you is older or bigger than you. o More than one person is ganging up on bullying you. o No adult is nearby. o You feel trapped.  Check your feelings I need to get calm.

17  Stay Calm Take a deep breath in preparation. Imagine yourself talking in a strong, clear, respectful voice.  Use Assertive Behaviors Stand or sit tall, hold your head high. Look straight at the person who is doing the bullying. Speak respectfully in a strong, clear voice. o “That’s Bullying. I want you to stop!” Walk away calmly after you have spoken out.

18 Bullying is… REPEATED OVER TIME and DONE ON PURPOSE.
