JICA Projects for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation in Developing Countries ► ► Objective to develop human resources and physical basis in each countries to contribute to mitigate disasters through elaboration of seismic codes or other ways to empower the CP organization to be a national/regional center of earthquake disasters mitigation activities ► ► Scope of Activities instrumentation of seismometers and strong motion structural testing dissemination of information through trainings, seminars, and others ► ► Programs offered by Japanese Government dispatch of Japanese experts training of CP personnel in Japan donation of facilities and equipments for monitoring, testing, R&D, dissemination & others

JICA Project on the Reduction of Seismic Risk for Buildings and Structures in Romania Romania has been receiving damage from earthquakes, such as the 1977 destructive earthquake of M7.5 occurred in the Vrancea district (Total toll 1,578), and working on the reduction of seismic risk through Japanese support. (1) Project Purpose Improvement and dissemination of technology to reduce building collapse in case of great earthquakes are achieved. (2) Romanian Counterpart National Center for Seismic Risk Reduction, Ministry of Transports, Constructions and Tourism (MTCT) (3) Japanese Counterparts Building Research Institute National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport) (4) Project Period Five Years from October 2002 to September 2007

JICA Project on the Reduction of Seismic Risk for Buildings and Structures in Romania (5) Project Outputs 1. Effective and low-cost retrofit techniques are developed by Center and acquired by structural engineers. 2. Regulations/ codes concerning seismic issues for both new buildings and existing ones are improved by MTCT and Center. 3. Post- earthquake evaluation techniques of the damaged buildings are developed by Center and acquired by structural engineers. 4. Disaster prevention education for the citizens is improved by Center.
