Admission Requirements (UC, CSU, most 4-year Universities) Students must complete the following subjects with a C or better: A – 2 years history / social studies B – 4 years English C – 3 years mathematics (4 years recommended) D – 2 years lab-science (3 years recommended) E – 2 years same foreign language (3 years recommended) F – 1 year visual/performing art (art, dance, drama, music) G – 1 year college prep elective

Why should students meet A-G requirements? All students should have the opportunity to choose whether or not they want to go to college Students who don’t prepare early and who don’t meet A-G requirements cannot attend most four-year universities Students who meet A-G requirements are better prepared to attend community colleges and have a higher transfer rate and higher rate in general meeting their educational goals continued…

Students will be better prepared in life even if they don’t go to college It is Madison’s mission to see that our students meet A-G requirements…All AVID students need to meet A-G requirements It is fairly easy to meet A-G requirements because many of the courses also meet Madison’s graduation requirements

A–Two years history/social studies 9th or 10th Grade – One year World History 1 and 2 Advanced World History 1 and 2 11th Grade – Two years US History 1 and 2 AP US History 1 and 2 12th Grade – Additional year (required for HS diploma) Government 1 and Economics 1 Political Science 1 and 2 (101 and 102) college level Additional Year: AP European History

B – Four Years English 9th Grade – one year 10th Grade – two years English 1 and 2 (block classes apply) Advanced or Seminar English 1 and 2 10th Grade – two years English 3 and 4 (block classes apply) Advanced or Seminar English 3 and 4 continued…

Why should students take AP classes? Students will be more prepared for college and life if they take more rigorous courses! AP classes will raise student GPA’s. Students get weighted credit as long as they take the exam Colleges give students additional points for taking AP and Advanced/Honors classes Students who take AP classes and receive an exam score of a 3, 4, or 5 will not have to do equivalent general education courses at most universities and colleges. This cuts down on costs and time!

Madison’s Open-door AP Policy AVID and ALL students should be encouraged to take AP classes We will support all students in taking more rigorous classes Our teachers should support our students in their AP quests Students have a right to take AP classes if they choose Students have the right to fail (we will have a back up plan for students to eliminate this from happening)
