Name Date Hour Unit 3: Slavery Attempts at solving the Slavery Problem

I. Missouri Compromise: 1820 A. 1820: MO wants to be a state …whether slave or free, they would tip the balance of power. B. Henry Clay says MO can be a slave state if ME is admitted as a free state Look at page 358

II. The Wilmot Proviso A. No slavery allowed in territories gained from war with Mexico.

III. The Compromise of 1850 A. CA becomes a FREE state B. Slave trade abolished in Wash. D.C. C. Stronger law to help slaveholders recapture runaway slaves.

IV. The Fugitive Slave Act A. Those accused of being fugitives (runaways) held w/o arrest warrant. No right to jury trial. B. Federal judge ruled each case…got $5 for releasing a runaway, and $10 for turning them over to a slave holder C. Fines for people who helped runaways D. Northerners couldnt ignore it anymore… i. (DONT WRITE THIS DOWN): should they obey the law and support slavery, or break the law and oppose slavery?
