India Population – 1.21 billion Area- 3.2 million km 2 Capital City – New Delhi

Kerala Kerala has the lowest corruption figures of all Indian states. Kerala is a state on the south west coast of main land India. State Capital – Trivandrum. Population: 33,387,677 Kerala is home to 2.76% of India's people. Population density: 859 persons per km²

Population: 33,387,677 Literacy Rate: 93.91% Birth Rate: 14.1 Population Growth Rate: 14.2% Total Fertility Rate: 1.7 Death Rate: 7.0 Population: 1,220,800,358 Literacy rate: 74.04% Birth Rate: Population Growth Rate: 17.6% Total Fertility Rate: 2.4 Death Rate: 7.4

The ‘green revolution’ of agricultural and medical advances has lead to a massive population boom in India. Large youthful population of reproductive age. People are beginning to live longer due to increases in medicine and care. This means there is a lower death rate.

One of the main reasons there is an uncharacteristically low birth rate and population growth in Kerala is government policies. Government policies of showing the benefits of few children have had an effect upon the mentality towards having children. The communist government has tried to share the wealth in Kerala and in doing so there is less need to have many children for labour out of desperation. Improving standard of living through material improvements. The government policies of education available to all, even women, has given everyone a basic education and given people the ability to improve their own earning through improved work skills. The education of women has also led to women having a bigger role in society, meaning they are able to put off childbirth in favour of perusing a career.

Large proportion of country are Hindi, many Hindus believe it is their dharma (duty) to reproduce. This will mean people are pressured through religion to have children. In Kerala there is a high literacy rate (94%) meaning people are educated enough to get higher paid jobs and not rely on their children to support them. Emancipation and education of women has had a massive effect where women are beginning to look at careers for themselves rather than just being a mother and housewife. Every year 900,000 Indians die of lack of clean water and breathing polluted air. This will affect the death rate and the natural increase. Widely available contraception in Kerala. Cultural attitude favouring a smaller family and providing a better future for a few rather than a poor one for many.

India has a humid temperature with a yearly monsoon season bringing many diseases and epidemics that can cause severe loss of life in the country.

People are beginning to work more in secondary and tertiary industries rather than agricultural and primary jobs, meaning there is less need for children for labour. Children are seen as more of an economic burden to their families by means of higher education and general expenditure. People are less likely to be able to afford many children.
