S ilence H urts U s Speak Up!

S ilence H urts U s Imagine this: The bell for lunch is about to ring… T ommy T rackstar and H annah H urdler wait at the classroom door… the bell rings and they’re off… sprinting down the hallway at 100 mph they must be the first in the lunch line!

S ilence H urts U s P olly P edestrian calmly walks down another hall… she approaches a corner… T ommy and H annah approach the same corner from a different hall… they have slowed to 98 mph - (it is a corner)

S ilence H urts U s CRASH! Books and bodies (but no blood - we must keep this G rated) are scattered everywhere. What if someone would have said “Please don’t run.” or “Why such a hurry?” or “Slow down.” Bumps and bruises could have been avoided.

S ilence H urts U s Speak Up because S ilence H urts all of U s

S ilence H urts U s Imagine if… W ally W allwriter was about to scribble his silly signature on the bathroom wall… and someone speaks up and says “Wall writing is wrong Wally – Won’t you stop?”

S ilence H urts U s G abby G ossipwicky starts a conversation with “Did you hear that so and so said such and such and …” and someone speaks up and says “Say something nice or nothing at all.”

S ilence H urts U s Speak Up because S ilence H urts all of U s

S ilence H urts U s Imagine if… B uddy B udgeway tried to tiptoe to the top of the lunch line … C helsey C heatster tried to copy Cathy’s computer comments … and someone speaks up and says “Stop that. It isn’t right.”

S ilence H urts U s Imagine if … B rutus B ullyboy persistently pestered V ictor V ictimson… and no one said anything.

S ilence H urts U s Every day someone is a victim of bullying. Don’t let it happen. Speak up. Because S ilence H urts all of U s

S ilence H urts U s SO … you aren’t someone who bullies others, and you haven’t been bullied yourself. BUT … if you see it happening to others, you can help put a stop to it. It might be easier to stand by and watch, or to try to ignore it, but think about how you would feel if the bullying was happening to YOU.

S ilence H urts U s Speak up! Say something like: “Cut it out.” “Nobody thinks that’s funny.” “That is not cool.” When kids who bully see that other kids don’t think it is cool, they are more likely to stop.

S ilence H urts U s One of the best things you can do for a person who is being bullied is just to be there for him or her, and be a friend. Don’t be just a bystander, stand by them. Report the bullying to an adult.

Who should you tell? – Teacher – Counselor – Parent – Coach – Resource Officer – Administrator S ilence H urts U s

The SHU Box is a way to anonymously report bully, hazing, and other student issues. The SHU Box was created to break the code or culture of silence that exists in schools.

What types of things can I report? You can report through the SHU Box anything from bullying to drugs to sexual harassment, discrimination, verbal harassment, threats, vandalism, or other non-emergency but dangerous behavior. S ilence H urts U s

Why should I report? By submitting a report, you help administrators to become more aware of the incidents happening in our school. They can’t fix problems if they don’t know about them. By reporting, you make our school a better and safer place to be.

S ilence H urts U s When will someone read the comments placed in SHU Box? Daily. Everyday a responsible adult will read the comments and report the findings to the appropriate people. Counselors, the resource officer, and/or an administrator will then act to fix the problem.

S ilence H urts U s If you would like to report an issue please write your comment on a piece of paper and take it to the counseling office. The SHU box will be available for you to report your comment. Please only put comments in the SHU box, and only comments that you know to be true and that you think might help your peers.

Now you can “Speak Up” digitally. Go to the TH Bell Website S ilence H urts U s

Click on the Students menu > Silence Hurts Us > to find a digital way to report any incident. S ilence H urts U s
