Common Problems in Paragraph 1 Everyone makes mistakes!

Don’t Panic! You might see a lot of red ink from grammar and vocabulary mistakes. Most of these I am correction for your information only, for this paragraph I was more concerned about formatting and paragraph structure.

Topic sentences… This is what students lost the most points for on this paragraph. The reader learns about the TOPIC and MAIN IDEA in the TOPIC SENTENCE. The topic sentence should be the first sentence of your paragraph.

Concluding Sentences The last sentence in your paragraph should also restate the main idea of your paragraph.

Dream jobs Many students said something like “My dream is doctor.” A better way to express this is “My dream is to be a doctor.”

How to Write a Good Title Always put a title at the top of your paragraph. It should: Be centered Have the first and last words capitalized as well as all nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. NOT have quotation marks (“”)

Jobs don’t have “welfare” Welfare is money the government gives to the poor. If you have a job, the company you work for gives you rewards, such as: Salary Benefits (vacation, health insurance, etc.)

Please double space your paragraphs Double spacing makes it easier for me to edit and correct your paragraphs.

Please follow the directions In this assignment I asked you to write about: Why a job is your dream job Why the job is a good fit for you Many students wrote in great detail about what people with those jobs do, or how to get qualified for their dream job. This should not be the focus of this paragraph.

Never begin a sentence with these words: and so but

Homework – Paragraph #2 Write a paragraph describing a time you used creative thinking to solve a problem. Explain the problem, and how you solved it. Your paragraph must: Be at least 7-10 sentences long, with 200-300 words. Use paragraph formatting as discussed in class including a title, topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. Be on A4-sized paper Include the CE2 cover sheet (you can download it from the class web site: http://kgucollegeenglish2.wordpress.com)
