1 “I Can” Learning Targets 4 th English/Writing 1 st Six Weeks

2 Ongoing/Year-Long Skills I can write in print (manuscript) and cursive so that others can read my writing. I can spell words that are used often. I can spell words that are often misspelled. I can use word play, word walls, and word sorts to help me develop my vocabulary.

3 “I Can” Unit 1 I can describe the meaning of “sentence fragment”. I can write complete sentences. I can write sentences that have words in an order that makes sense. I can use a capital to begin a sentence. I can put correct punctuation at the end of a sentence. I can use end marks to help me identify declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences. I can combine simple sentences into compound sentences. I can use a comma and a joining word (conjunction) to combine two sentences. I can write simple and compound sentences that have subjects and verbs that agree in number and person. I can identify and correct incomplete and run-on sentences.

4 “I Can” Unit 2 I can describe the meaning of “possessive nouns”. I can write a proper noun that begins with a capital letter. I can identify and use nouns that are singular/plural, common/proper, or possessive.

5 “I Can” Unit 8 I can describe the meaning of… – topic sentence – proofreading I can use correct page format: paragraphs, margins, indentations, titles. I can pick a topic to write about. I can use graphic organizers (listing, clustering, story maps, webs, outlines). I can write my sentences differently to make them more interesting to the reader. I can write using vivid language. I can write a paragraph that has a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion. I can choose the best supporting sentence in a paragraph. I can write my paragraphs in sequential order. I can create and use a rubric for peer review and editing. I can revise my writing to make my ideas more clear. I can give my writing a good title. I can use the writing process: brainstorm and organize ideas, create a first draft, revise and proofread draft, publish and share completed work.
